Ryan Kalkbrenner shines against Dallas, fueling Hornets’ optimism

Ryan Kalkbrenner’s performance against the Dallas Mavericks has sparked a wave of enthusiasm among Charlotte Hornets fans, showcasing his potential as a key contributor this season. Following a challenging start to the preseason, the rookie center finally found his rhythm, delivering an impressive display that promises a brighter outlook for the Hornets.

Early Struggles and a Strategic Shift

In his initial two preseason games, Kalkbrenner faced a steep learning curve, particularly while defending against the agile big men of the Oklahoma City Thunder. The mismatch highlighted his struggles to protect the rim effectively, which is his strong suit. Recognizing the need for a more favorable matchup, Coach Charles Lee placed Kalkbrenner into the starting lineup for the game against Dallas, a decision that proved transformative.

Kalkbrenner not only adapted well but also demonstrated the skills that could make him a valuable asset for the Hornets as the regular season approaches. His ability to perform against a formidable Dallas frontcourt instilled hope in fans eager to see him thrive.

Impressive Finishing Touch

One of Kalkbrenner’s standout attributes is his finishing ability, a skill he honed during his college career. In the game against Dallas, he showcased this talent with a flawless shooting performance, going 7-for-7 from the field and scoring 14 points.

His proficiency at the rim is noteworthy; last season, he ranked among the top in Division I for shots taken at the basket, achieving an impressive 79.5% conversion rate. Against the Mavericks, Kalkbrenner capitalized on scoring opportunities through putbacks and strategic cuts to the basket, illustrating how he can fit seamlessly into the Hornets’ offensive scheme.

Rebounding Skills on Display

Standing at 7’1”, Kalkbrenner is expected to make a significant impact on the boards, and he delivered in that regard as well. With 10 rebounds, including four offensive boards against Dallas, he showcased his ability to control the glass.

Ironically, while he had success against the similarly sized Dereck Lively II, Kalkbrenner found himself challenged by the more mobile Dwight Powell. Powell’s agility on the boards and transition play posed some difficulties for the rookie, indicating a need for continued growth as he prepares for upcoming matchups.

Challenges Ahead Against the Grizzlies

Looking forward, Kalkbrenner faces a different challenge in the upcoming game against the Memphis Grizzlies. With key players like Zach Edey and Jaren Jackson Jr. sidelined due to injuries, he will likely contend with centers Jock Landale, Santi Aldama, and GG Jackson II. Both Aldama and Jackson II present unique challenges with their outside shooting and speed, which could stretch Kalkbrenner’s defensive capabilities.

Landale, while slightly shorter, is bulkier and possesses a mid-range game that demands respect. Kalkbrenner’s ability to adapt to these varied styles of play will be crucial as he continues to develop against a diverse range of opponents.

What the Preseason Holds for Kalkbrenner

As Kalkbrenner moves forward in the preseason, his performance will be closely scrutinized. If he struggles against the Grizzlies, it may reaffirm the concerns raised during earlier games. However, a strong showing could signal that he is capable of handling a wider array of matchups than many initially anticipated.

The Hornets are hopeful that Kalkbrenner’s growth will not only enhance his individual game but also bolster the team’s overall performance as they gear up for the regular season. His journey through the preseason will be pivotal in shaping both his future and that of the franchise.
