Russell Westbrook’s Surprising Move to the Kings

Russell Westbrook has etched his name into the annals of Oklahoma City Thunder history, firmly establishing himself as one of the franchise’s all-time greats. Selected fourth overall in the 2008 NBA Draft after a standout career at UCLA, Westbrook’s 11 years with the Thunder were nothing short of spectacular.

During his tenure in Oklahoma City, the dynamic point guard averaged an impressive 23 points, 8.4 assists, 7 rebounds, and 1.8 steals per game. His legacy includes accolades such as All-Rookie honors, eight All-Star selections, and a coveted MVP award. However, after the 2018-19 season, the Thunder decided to pivot in a new direction, initiating a rebuild that led to the acquisition of star player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and an influx of draft picks.

Following his departure from Oklahoma City, Westbrook’s journey took him through several franchises, including the Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, and LA Clippers. Most recently, during the 2024-25 season, he played with the Denver Nuggets.

Last season brought Westbrook full circle as he returned to Oklahoma City for a pivotal playoff series against the Thunder. In a gripping showdown during the Western Conference Semifinals, the Thunder triumphed over the Nuggets in a thrilling seven-game series.

As the offseason unfolded, Westbrook found himself exploring new opportunities. Just before the season’s start, he made the eye-catching decision to sign with the Sacramento Kings, marking an unexpected twist in his career. This move not only adds depth to the Kings’ roster but also sets the stage for a compelling new chapter in Westbrook’s storied career.
