Rui Hachimura stuns with career-high stats as Lakers weigh massive $114.5M extension offer

Hachimura Shines as Lakers Consider Major Contract Extension

The Los Angeles Lakers are seeing more than just Austin Reaves stepping up this season. Power forward Rui Hachimura is emerging as an essential part of the team’s future, making a strong case for a lucrative contract as he continues to impress on the court.

A Stellar Start to the Season

Hachimura has been a notable presence in all 12 of the Lakers’ games so far, averaging 16 points and 3.8 rebounds while logging over 34 minutes per contest. His performance has not only led to career-high statistics but has also drawn comparisons to the great Michael Jordan from his head coach. With the clock ticking toward his unrestricted free agency set for after June 30, Hachimura is making it clear that he deserves a long-term commitment from the Lakers.

Career-High Numbers Reflect Growth

The 27-year-old forward is hitting new heights this season, boasting a career-best 16 points per game alongside an impressive 57.5% shooting percentage from the field. Hachimura has taken on clutch moments with confidence, including critical shots that contributed to the Lakers’ recent victory over the San Antonio Spurs.

Head coach JJ Redick praised Hachimura’s ability to stay engaged in games, noting, “He can go eight minutes of a game, which sometimes can be 30 minutes of real time, not touch a basketball — literally not touch a ball — and then just bang a wide-open three.” Such moments exemplify Hachimura’s potential as a game-changer.

Defensive Prowess Adds Value

Beyond his scoring, Hachimura’s defensive contributions have also been crucial. His efforts have helped the Lakers maintain one of the league’s best three-point defense records, allowing the second-lowest field goal percentage from beyond the arc. Redick highlighted Hachimura’s skill in isolations, particularly against elite shooters like Klay Thompson, stating, “Rui Hachimura is the best guy on our team at using that stick hand in isolation. So, he prevents the 3.”

Contract Extension on the Horizon

With his impressive play, Hachimura finds himself in a favorable position as he becomes eligible for a four-year, $114.5 million contract extension before the June 30 deadline. Currently, he is in the final year of a three-year, $51 million deal. The momentum of his performance this season could be the tipping point for the Lakers to secure Hachimura’s future with the team.

Consistency is Key

As Hachimura continues to find his rhythm, his teammates are taking note of his impact. Guard Marcus Smart commented on Hachimura’s reliability, stating, “One thing we know about Rui is he’s gonna be consistent. He’s gonna get to his spots. He’s gonna make plays for us, and he’s gonna come in clutch for us.”

The Lakers are closely monitoring Hachimura’s development, and as the season unfolds, his journey is one to watch closely.
