Rockets’ season teeters as point guard crisis explodes after humiliating loss to Clippers

Rockets’ Season on the Brink Amid Point Guard Crisis Following Devastating Loss to Clippers

The Houston Rockets entered the season with high hopes, but the landscape has shifted dramatically since Fred VanVleet’s ACL tear in late September. Once viewed as potential playoff contenders, the Rockets find themselves grappling with a critical void at point guard, a situation that has significantly hampered their aspirations as December unfolds.

A Disheartening December

The Rockets faced a harsh reality check on Tuesday night, suffering their most embarrassing defeat of the season at the hands of the struggling Los Angeles Clippers, who boasted a dismal 8-21 record prior to the matchup. The 128-108 loss was a glaring indicator of the issues plaguing the Rockets. They allowed nearly 70 points during the second and third quarters, showcasing an alarming lack of competitiveness, particularly on the offensive end. Kevin Durant, the team’s leading scorer, managed only 22 points on 8-of-15 shooting, a stark reminder of the team’s current struggles.

As they navigate through December, the Rockets have posted a disappointing 4-6 record. Losses to the Clippers, Sacramento Kings, and New Orleans Pelicans—teams currently occupying the bottom of the Western Conference—have raised serious questions about their viability as a playoff team. Compounding these issues is a defense that ranks 23rd in the league in defensive rating since December 1, exposing vulnerabilities that opponents are eager to exploit.

The VanVleet Void

The absence of VanVleet, a seasoned All-Star who provided stability and mentorship to a young Rockets roster, is glaringly evident. His ability to direct the offense and play solid two-way basketball was instrumental last season, especially during the playoffs when the youthful squad struggled to find their footing. While the Rockets aimed to bolster their experience during the offseason, the lack of a true point guard has left them adrift.

Since the start of December, Houston has struggled mightily with ball security, ranking 29th in turnover percentage at 17.6% and averaging 17.6 turnovers per game. The team’s sloppy ball handling has become a focal point for opposing defenses, who apply pressure at half court and aim to neutralize Durant as the primary scorer. This strategy has forced the 37-year-old to take on additional responsibilities, often moving away from his preferred scoring positions.

Offensive Disarray

Alperen Sengun has also taken on point guard duties, but like Durant, he has been pushed beyond his effective scoring range. Although the Rockets maintain decent ball movement and manage to score in spurts, they frequently rely on individual shot creation rather than cohesive offensive sets. The absence of VanVleet has hindered their ability to establish rhythm, contributing to their struggles. Currently, Houston ranks 25th in assist percentage and 16th in assists per game for the month.

If the Rockets fail to devise a strategy to navigate their games without VanVleet or a legitimate floor leader, they risk further disarray. The heightened pressure could lead to increased trade speculation as the deadline approaches. Initially, the Rockets were mentioned in discussions for veteran point guards following VanVleet’s injury, but early-season success had quelled those rumors. Now, with their struggles laid bare, the noise is growing louder once more.

As the season progresses, Houston must confront these challenges head-on or face the prospect of spiraling into deeper trouble. The clock is ticking, and the pressure is mounting.
