Reed Sheppard’s Breakout Performance Fuels Rockets’ Victory Over Warriors
The Houston Rockets appear to have struck gold in their search for a suitable replacement for Fred VanVleet, who is sidelined for the season with a torn ACL. Rather than relying on a single player, the Rockets have turned to an ensemble cast that includes Amen Thompson, Josh Okogie, and notably, Reed Sheppard.
Sheppard’s Emergence as a Key Player
In his second year, Sheppard is transforming into the player many anticipated when he was drafted. Last season, opportunities were scarce for the 21-year-old guard, but he has since embraced his role as a two-way shooter. This season, he is averaging 14.3 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 3.3 assists, all while boasting impressive shooting splits of 49% from the field, 46% from beyond the arc, and 71% from the free-throw line.
The apex of his development came in a recent showdown against the Golden State Warriors, where Sheppard erupted for a career-high 31 points, along with nine rebounds and five assists. His performance was pivotal in securing a win for the Rockets, especially with Kevin Durant unavailable and several starters struggling.
Head Coach Ime Udoka on Sheppard’s Growth
Head coach Ime Udoka has taken note of Sheppard’s evolution, particularly on the defensive end. While his offensive game has flourished, it is his defensive prowess that has become increasingly valuable. Sheppard has emerged as a formidable disruptor against opposing point guards, effectively minimizing blow-bys and missed assignments.
“His offense is there; obviously, he’s making shots,” Udoka remarked. “It gives us a different look in the pick-and-roll with his shot-making ability. It draws the defense, opens up for everybody else, making the right reads there. But defensively is where he’s shown the improvement overall. I think, taking on the challenge. The blow-bys are less and less, assignments missed and little things like that.”
Udoka emphasized that the goal has been to make Sheppard’s defenders go east-west, allowing the Rockets’ defense to collapse around him. “You can guard him, stay in front, and help will come. He’s doing a great job of that.”
Sheppard’s Recent Surge
After a rocky start to the season, Sheppard has found his rhythm. In just 21 minutes per game, he is posting averages of 11.9 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 3.4 assists, with an impressive effective field goal percentage of 69%. His assist-to-turnover ratio stands at 3.4, and he is shooting 48.6% from three-point range—an impressive figure given the volume of attempts.
Since Sheppard began to heat up, the Rockets have posted a 6-1 record, showcasing the impact of his contributions. As the season progresses, it will be intriguing to see how Sheppard continues to evolve and solidify his place in the Rockets’ rotation.
