Raptors must reconsider Anthony Davis in trade discussions with Mavericks
The Toronto Raptors find themselves at a crucial juncture as they seek to bolster their frontcourt depth in the coming weeks. Among several names floated in trade conversations is Mavericks All-Star Anthony Davis, who joined Dallas from the Los Angeles Lakers in a blockbuster deal for Luka Doncic on February 1. While Davis is undoubtedly a marquee player, the Raptors should tread carefully before pursuing a trade for the former No. 1 overall pick.
Injury concerns loom large
Davis’s recent performance has been marred by injuries, the most notable being a groin issue sustained during the Mavericks’ Christmas Day loss to the Golden State Warriors. Over the course of his career, an increasing number of injuries have begun to take their toll. For the Raptors, this should raise immediate red flags when considering a potential acquisition.
Since joining the Mavericks, Davis has appeared in just 25 of a possible 65 games. His limited availability has contributed to Dallas’s struggles, as they currently sit at a disappointing 12-20 record this season. The Mavericks need Davis on the court to compete effectively, but his frequent absences underscore the precarious nature of relying on him.
Evaluating the fit in Toronto
While the Raptors clearly need a reliable big man, the addition of an injury-prone player like Davis could complicate matters. Currently, Toronto’s center depth is thin, particularly with Jakob Poeltl nursing a back injury. However, if Davis is similarly prone to missing games, adding him would not address the Raptors’ depth issues—rather, it could exacerbate them.
Acquiring Davis might also necessitate trading Poeltl, which could result in a problematic swap of challenges for both teams. The Raptors could end up losing greater value by giving up assets for a player who may not be able to contribute consistently.
Dallas’s dilemma and Toronto’s needs
Davis’s injury situation further complicates the Mavericks’ plans, as it increases their reliance on other players like Daniel Gafford, who has been a name of interest for Toronto in past discussions. The Raptors are in dire need of healthy, dependable big men, and at this stage, Davis simply does not fit that criteria.
As the Mavericks await Davis’s recovery timeline, the Raptors must reassess their strategy moving forward. Currently, the team is gearing up for a matchup against the Washington Wizards, featuring Alex Saar. The game is set to tip off at 7 p.m. ET at Capital One Arena, with fans able to catch all the action on TSN Sports, Monumental Sports Network, or via NBA League Pass.
In navigating the trade market, the Raptors should prioritize players who can contribute consistently, ensuring they avoid the pitfalls associated with high-risk players like Davis.
