Precious Achiuwa returns to Miami Heat as versatile asset after Knicks’ roster overhaul leaves him out

Precious Achiuwa returns to Miami Heat as versatile asset

Precious Achiuwa is back where it all began, having inked a one-year deal with the Miami Heat, the team that drafted him. This marks a notable homecoming for the 25-year-old forward/center, who spent the last two seasons with the New York Knicks following a trade that brought him to New York as part of the deal for R.J. Barrett.

Knicks’ Offseason Overhaul

This offseason, the Knicks were particularly busy, making significant changes to their roster. Despite Achiuwa’s steady contributions, he was not among those retained. Over two seasons in New York, he played 106 games, often providing reliable minutes off the bench. While never a standout star, Achiuwa carved out a niche as a versatile presence in the frontcourt.

In the 2022-23 season, Achiuwa averaged 6.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 0.8 steals, showing flashes of promise despite limited playing time. His performance improved in the 2023-24 season, where increased minutes allowed him to elevate his averages to 7.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. However, the influx of new talent in New York left Achiuwa with little opportunity moving forward.

New Additions Impact Roster Dynamics

The Knicks’ strategy included re-signing veteran guard Landry Shamet and bolstering their backcourt with the additions of Malcolm Brogdon and Jordan Clarkson. In the frontcourt, they brought in Guerschon Yabusele from Philadelphia. Last season, Yabusele made a solid impact, averaging 11 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.1 assists while playing nearly 27 minutes per game.

With these changes, the Knicks’ primary frontcourt now features Karl-Anthony Towns, Yabusele, and Mitchell Robinson. Additionally, second-year center Ariel Hukporti is expected to remain as depth, though questions linger about New York’s frontcourt stability—especially given Robinson’s injury history.

Achiuwa’s New Opportunity in Miami

As the Knicks finalize their roster, Achiuwa finds himself in a favorable position upon his return to Miami. The Heat will be looking for players who can contribute in various roles, and Achiuwa’s versatility could play a crucial part in their rotation this season. As he steps back into a familiar environment, Achiuwa will aim to secure a meaningful role and make an impact on a team with championship aspirations. His ability to adapt and provide consistent performance will be pivotal as Miami navigates the upcoming season.
