Philadelphia 76ers navigate offseason to enhance roster and secure Quentin Grimes
The Philadelphia 76ers find themselves at a crossroads as they prepare for the upcoming season. After a disappointing 2024-25 campaign, the organization is eager to regain its competitive edge in the league. To achieve this, the 76ers are actively exploring trade options for some of their depth players, aiming to bolster their future while maintaining key talent.
Shopping for Cap Flexibility
According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, the team is weighing offers for both Andre Drummond and Kelly Oubre Jr. This strategic move is primarily focused on generating cap space necessary to retain Quentin Grimes, a restricted free agent who has shown significant promise since joining the team.
“If they are able to find a deal for one of those two guys as we get closer to camp, that would open up some more wiggle room for Philadelphia to be able to pay [Quentin] Grimes a little bit more,” Fischer noted.
Quentin Grimes Emerges as a Key Player
Grimes has quickly become a pivotal figure for the 76ers after his mid-season acquisition last February. In his 28 appearances, including 25 starts, he averaged an impressive 21.9 points, 4.5 assists, and 5.4 rebounds per game. His shooting prowess was evident, as he connected on 37 percent of his three-point attempts, making him a reliable offensive weapon for the team.
Assessing Oubre and Drummond’s Contributions
Over the past two seasons, Oubre has contributed consistently, averaging 15.3 points per game while maintaining a shooting percentage of 45 percent from the field. However, his three-point shooting has been less reliable, with a conversion rate of 30 percent.
Drummond, in his second stint with the 76ers, played a valuable role last season, averaging 7.3 points and 7.8 rebounds across 40 games, including 23 starts. His experience and rebounding ability have made him a solid presence in the paint, but the team is now looking to balance its roster and financial commitments.
Looking Ahead
As the 76ers continue to assess their options, the focus remains on creating a competitive team that can make a deep playoff run. With Grimes’ potential and the desire to free up salary cap space, the coming weeks will be pivotal for the franchise as they navigate trades and roster decisions ahead of training camp.
