Paolo Banchero explodes over Magic’s turnover nightmare in Celtics heartbreaker: “That definitely hurts”

Banchero and the Magic Confront Turnover Troubles in Heartbreaking Loss to Celtics

The Orlando Magic are grappling with a turnover crisis that cost them dearly in their recent matchup against the Boston Celtics, culminating in a narrow 111-107 defeat. The frustration was palpable among the players, as they recognized that the game could have swung in their favor had they managed the ball better.

Turnovers Plague the Magic

In this encounter, the Magic committed a staggering 17 turnovers, which the Celtics exploited to the tune of 29 points. Paolo Banchero, a key player for Orlando, was responsible for six of those turnovers. Following the game, he reflected on the impact of these mistakes, stating, “That definitely hurts. Seventeen turnovers. Boston did a great job of converting on those turnovers. You know, they’re a very experienced team; you can’t give them that many chances, and they made us pay.”

Assessing the Team’s Performance

Currently, the Magic rank 26th in the NBA for turnovers per game, averaging 16.3—only trailing behind the Houston Rockets, Utah Jazz, Portland Trail Blazers, and Washington Wizards. This is a stark contrast to last season when they averaged just 14 turnovers per game, landing them at 12th in the league. While some may attribute the uptick in turnovers to the team’s increased pace of play, head coach Jamahl Mosley offered a different perspective.

“Two people on it, come off it. Share it, move it, pass it. Tonight, we played in a crowd, and I’ll give Boston a ton of credit. They’re very handsy with what they do. They got their hands on a lot of basketballs, but also, we decided we played in the crowd a little bit too much,” Mosley explained, emphasizing the need for better decision-making under pressure.

Looking Forward: Room for Improvement

The increase in turnovers can be attributed to various factors, including a team still finding its rhythm and identity early in the season. However, optimism remains within the locker room. Jalen Suggs expressed confidence in the team’s ability to rectify these issues, stating, “[We] can definitely clean them up. It’s not an excuse for them at all, but I didn’t think any of them were super glaring in terms of trying to force it. … Turnovers are part of the game. Just try to limit them as much as we can and especially limit them in scoring off of it. I think regardless of whether we turn it over, we need to focus on stopping the live-ball ones and putting an emphasis on getting back and not letting them convert on those.”

As the Magic navigate these challenges, there is a sense of urgency to address their turnover woes. With only ten games into the season, there remains ample opportunity for growth and improvement on the court. The question remains: Can the Magic learn from their mistakes and turn the tide as they progress through the season?
