Paolo Banchero aims to elevate Magic’s playoff dreams by mastering the deep ball and dominating the glass

Paolo Banchero sets sights on elevating Magic’s playoff aspirations

Paolo Banchero, the Orlando Magic’s standout forward, is on a mission to transform his team’s playoff prospects into a serious championship run. Entering his third season, Banchero has already made history, becoming the first Magic player to earn Rookie of the Year honors since 2001, a feat previously accomplished by legends Shaquille O’Neal and Mike Miller. As he continues to evolve, Banchero’s growth will be pivotal for the Magic if they hope to make a deep postseason push.

A New Era for the Magic

After years of rebuilding, the Magic find themselves in a promising position. With recent acquisitions, including Desmond Bane, and the misfortunes of rivals like Tyrese Haliburton and Jayson Tatum, the stage is set for a potential championship run. The onus, however, falls squarely on Banchero’s shoulders.

For Orlando to compete at the highest level, Banchero must elevate his game from star to superstar. This transition requires a focused approach on several key areas.

Mastering the Deep Ball

While Banchero has excelled inside the arc, shooting over 50% on two-point attempts last season, his three-point shooting has left room for improvement. With a career average of 32% from beyond the arc, his struggles can largely be attributed to a lack of playmaking support around him. Much of his perimeter shooting has come in isolation, where he faces stiff defenses.

The arrival of playmakers like Bane and Tyus Jones is expected to change this dynamic. Their presence will create more catch-and-shoot opportunities for Banchero, enabling him to take advantage of better looks from deep. Additionally, expected developments from teammates Jalen Suggs and Franz Wagner should provide Banchero with the most offensive support he has seen thus far in his career.

Enhancing Free-Throw Proficiency

In the high-stakes environment of the NBA playoffs, free-throw shooting often becomes a decisive factor. Banchero, who draws fouls consistently—averaging a career-high 8.4 attempts per game—needs to improve his free-throw percentage, which currently sits at around 73%.

By raising this figure into the upper 70s, he could convert crucial points during pivotal moments, potentially swinging the outcome of tight games. With his aggressive playing style and the ability to exploit mismatches, consistent success at the charity stripe could translate to improved win totals for the Magic.

Dominating the Boards

Rebounding remains a significant concern for the Magic, who ranked as one of the league’s weakest teams on the glass last season. Despite Banchero’s commendable average of 7 rebounds per game, the team needs even more from him. The center position, now a glaring hole following Bane’s addition, places added pressure on Banchero and Wagner to elevate their rebounding efforts.

To solidify defensive possessions, both forwards will need to crash the boards relentlessly. By enhancing their rebounding, the Magic can create additional opportunities and mitigate the loss of second-chance points against them.

The Road Ahead

As the Magic gear up for a promising season, the focus will be on Banchero’s development as a player. With the right adjustments in his game, particularly in shooting from long range, converting free throws, and bolstering rebounding efforts, Banchero could very well lead the Magic on a deep playoff journey. The stakes have never been higher, and for the Orlando Magic, the future hinges on their rising star.
