Oklahoma City Thunder set to make bold move by promoting Branden Carlson amid roster shakeup!

Oklahoma City Thunder poised for change with Branden Carlson’s potential promotion

The Oklahoma City Thunder find themselves in a unique position as they navigate the current NBA season. With limited decisions on their plate, one key consideration looms large: the promotion of a two-way player to a standard contract. Through 16 games, it’s clear that the Thunder have established themselves as the frontrunners in the league, continuing to build off last season’s championship success. Even with Jalen Williams sidelined for the first month, the team’s performance has only improved.

Branden Carlson stands out in the lineup

As the Thunder assess their options, Branden Carlson emerges as the frontrunner for the promotion. The coaching staff, led by Mark Daigneault, has experimented with a variety of double-big lineups, and Carlson has consistently made the most of his minutes. Over the past four games, he has logged double-digit playing time in three of them, showcasing his skills with notable seven-point performances against both Charlotte and New Orleans.

Carlson’s versatility as a stretch five who can also provide rim protection is particularly valuable. His ability to replicate some of Chet Holmgren’s critical skills makes him an asset on a two-way deal. Historically, the Thunder have a tradition of promoting successful two-way players, as seen with Ajay Mitchell last season. Therefore, it seems likely that Carlson will earn a standard contract at some point this season.

Roster challenges ahead

However, Carlson’s path to a permanent spot is complicated by the Thunder’s current roster situation. With 12 players on standard contracts making significant contributions, the team faces a dilemma. Injuries to Nikola Topic and Thomas Sorber further limit options, necessitating a cut or trade to accommodate Carlson’s promotion.

In his fourth season, Ousmane Dieng has struggled to demonstrate the potential needed to be a reliable contributor for a contending team like the Thunder. With other players, such as Brooks Barnhizer and Chris Youngblood, stepping up and showcasing their potential on the wing, Dieng’s future with the team appears uncertain.

Depth at center is crucial

While it might seem redundant to have numerous big men on the roster, the Thunder understand the importance of depth at that position. Injuries and foul trouble are inevitable during a long season, and having a dependable stretch big like Carlson could be invaluable as they head into the playoffs. The team’s commitment to maintaining a robust frontcourt could ultimately be a key factor in their postseason success.

As the Thunder continue to solidify their roster and strategize for the remainder of the season, all eyes will be on Branden Carlson. His potential promotion could signify not just a personal milestone, but also a strategic move that enhances Oklahoma City’s championship aspirations.
