Oklahoma City makes waves with impressive start despite limited Chet Holmgren usage

Oklahoma City has burst onto the scene this NBA season, showcasing its dominance with a remarkable start. After 13 games, the Thunder find themselves with only a single loss, positioning them as the early favorites to secure the championship title once again. This impressive run is anchored by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who is playing at an MVP-caliber level, alongside a cast of role players who have stepped up admirably amid ongoing injuries.

Chet Holmgren’s Strong Performance

While the collective efforts of the team have been commendable, one of Oklahoma City’s most promising talents, Chet Holmgren, has been utilized in ways that limit his impact. Through nine games this season, Holmgren has made his presence felt, averaging an impressive 18.7 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game. His shooting efficiency is noteworthy, as he connects on 59.2% of his field goals and maintains a 37.8% accuracy from beyond the arc. Despite these strong numbers, Holmgren’s role has been somewhat constrained.

Positioning Challenges

The circumstances surrounding the Thunder’s injury situation have reshaped the dynamics of the roster, pushing Holmgren into a position where he primarily plays as a power forward. This shift, while beneficial in some aspects, has curtailed his opportunities to shine at center, where he could potentially be even more impactful. Head coach Mark Daigneault has pointed out that Holmgren’s effectiveness at the five spot hinges significantly on the availability of teammates like Jalen Williams or Kenrich Williams, both of whom have yet to see the court this season.

As the season progresses, the Thunder will look to navigate the challenges posed by injuries while maximizing Holmgren’s versatility. His potential to further elevate his game at center remains a tantalizing prospect for the team and its fans alike.
