Nuggets Make Roster Moves Ahead of Training Camp
The Denver Nuggets have made significant adjustments to their training camp roster, parting ways with two recent signings in anticipation of the upcoming season. As the countdown to training camp begins, the team has officially waived guard Javante McCoy and forward Justyn Hamilton, a decision announced shortly after their signing.
Roster Strategy and G League Plans
The waiving of McCoy and Hamilton is part of a strategic maneuver by the Nuggets to position both players for a potential roster bonus before they transition to the Grand Rapids Gold, Denver’s G League affiliate. According to reports, Hamilton is set to receive a bonus of approximately $85,300, contingent on his presence on the G League roster for at least 60 days. This approach not only provides financial incentives for the players but also allows the Nuggets to maintain flexibility in their roster management.
Hamilton, a 6-foot-7 forward, was acquired through a trade with the Oklahoma City Blue. In exchange for Hamilton, the Nuggets sent Andrew Funk and a second-round pick in the 2026 NBA G League Draft to the Blue. Last season, Hamilton appeared in 26 games for the Blue, averaging 7.7 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 1.1 assists while shooting an impressive 56% from the field. His prior experience in the G League, combined with his college career at Kent State, positions him as a promising talent for the Gold.
McCoy’s Journey Through the G League
On the other hand, Javante McCoy has experienced a nomadic path through the G League over the past three years. The former Boston University standout has played for several teams, including the South Bay Lakers, Austin Spurs, and Motor City Cruise. Last season, McCoy faced challenges, participating in only four games with the Cruise, where he averaged 10.3 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 1.5 assists while shooting 48.3% from the field.
With both players now likely headed to the G League, the Nuggets can focus on their remaining training camp invites. Notably, veterans Moses Brown and Kessler Edwards are still in the mix, creating opportunities for them to secure a spot on the roster. As it stands, the Nuggets have 14 players signed to traditional contracts, leaving room for potential additions as training camp progresses.
The Nuggets’ strategic roster moves reflect their commitment to developing talent while balancing the competitive dynamics of the NBA landscape. As training camp approaches, all eyes will be on how the remaining roster shapes up and what opportunities lie ahead for the players involved.
