New Orleans trade frenzy erupts: Pelicans eye Kuminga, Warriors target Murphy in blockbuster swap!

New Orleans trade frenzy erupts with Kuminga and Murphy at the center of speculation

As the offseason unfolds, the landscape of the NBA is buzzing with potential trades, and the New Orleans Pelicans are emerging as a key player in the mix. With Jonathan Kuminga of the Golden State Warriors garnering attention, teams like the Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns have already expressed interest. However, recent insights from Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated reveal that New Orleans could be making a significant move for the young forward.

Pelicans eyeing Kuminga

Mannix notes that “some execs believe New Orleans could be in play” for a trade involving Kuminga. This interest aligns with the Pelicans’ rebuilding strategy, as pairing a 23-year-old Kuminga with rookie standout Derik Queen could create an exciting young core. The intriguing aspect for Warriors fans is the mention of Pelicans’ wings, such as Trey Murphy III and Herb Jones, as potential trade bait that might catch Golden State’s attention.

While there have been whispers about the Warriors targeting Murphy and Jones, this is the first indication that the Pelicans are seriously considering Kuminga as a viable option. As the trade season heats up, the implications of such a move could ripple throughout the league.

What a Kuminga-for-Murphy trade could entail

Murphy, a 25-year-old wing who is quickly rising in the ranks, is currently in the first year of a manageable four-year, $112 million contract. Averaging 21.1 points per game, his ability to score from multiple levels makes him a coveted asset. Standing at 6’8″, he also possesses significant defensive upside. For the Warriors, he has emerged as the top target this trade season.

The Pelicans should seek a substantial return for Murphy, potentially asking for two first-round picks from any trade suitor. A plausible package for the Warriors might include Kuminga, Brandin Podziemski, an unprotected first-round pick in 2026, and a lightly protected first-round pick in 2028 in exchange for Murphy.

Exploring a Kuminga-for-Jones scenario

On the other hand, if the Warriors opt for a trade involving Herb Jones, the dynamics shift slightly. Jones, who is also under a team-friendly contract extending through at least the 2028-29 season (with a player option for 2029-30), currently has a salary of $13.9 million—significantly less than Kuminga’s $22.5 million. This difference could necessitate the Warriors absorbing an unwanted contract from New Orleans to facilitate the deal.

While Jones is recognized for his defensive prowess, his recent offensive struggles—evidenced by a three-point shooting percentage that has dipped to 33.8—raise questions about his fit with the Warriors. Two seasons ago, he boasted a much more impressive 41.8% from beyond the arc. The Warriors would be banking on a return to form as the season progresses, especially given their need for a larger wing capable of defending elite scorers.

A potential trade package for Jones might involve Kuminga, Gui Santos, and a 2026 first-round pick in exchange for Jones and Kevon Looney. Additionally, if the Warriors release Trayce Jackson-Davis ahead of the trade, they’ll have the financial flexibility and roster space to offer Pat Spencer a standard contract, adding further incentive to the move.

Gary Payton II could also be considered as a trade piece, though his implicit no-trade clause complicates matters. The Warriors may need to pivot to another player if they wish to finalize a deal.

As the trade talks intensify, the Pelicans and Warriors are positioned at the crossroads of a potential blockbuster that could reshape both franchises. The coming days will undoubtedly be pivotal as teams navigate the intricacies of the trade landscape.
