New Orleans Pelicans make surprising roster moves

The New Orleans Pelicans made headlines on Monday with unexpected roster adjustments, cutting two players who were on the fringes of the team. Jalen McDaniels and Garrison Brooks are now free agents, marking a significant shift in the Pelicans’ lineup.

The McDaniels connection

Jalen McDaniels, the older brother of Minnesota Timberwolves standout Jaden McDaniels, has spent over three seasons in the NBA, primarily with the Charlotte Hornets. His experience extends to brief stints with the Philadelphia 76ers, Toronto Raptors, and Washington Wizards. Throughout his career, McDaniels has averaged 6.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game, making him a more established player compared to his counterpart.

Brooks’ journey

On the other hand, Garrison Brooks entered the league as an undrafted player from Mississippi State in 2022. His rookie season saw him play for the Westchester Knicks in the G League, followed by overseas experiences in both Korea and Lithuania. While Brooks may not have the same level of experience as McDaniels, his international play has contributed to his development as a player.

Strategic moves for G League alignment

The decision to release McDaniels and Brooks appears to be a procedural maneuver aimed at aligning these players with the Pelicans’ G League affiliate, the Birmingham Squadron. This strategy allows the Pelicans to maintain a pool of borderline talent ready to step up when needed. By keeping these players in the system, New Orleans ensures that they have options available as they navigate the challenges of the season.

As the Pelicans look to solidify their roster, the focus remains on fielding a competitive team. Although the removal of McDaniels and Brooks may come as a surprise, it reflects the organization’s commitment to maximizing its talent pool for the upcoming season.
