Michael Porter Jr. shares insights on his trade to Brooklyn and the bond with Nikola Jokic

Michael Porter Jr. recently opened up about his relationship with Nikola Jokic, a connection that flourished during their time together with the Denver Nuggets. Following Porter Jr.’s trade to the Brooklyn Nets, he reflected on both his journey in Denver and the dynamics of his partnership with the laid-back Jokic.

A Journey with the Nuggets

Drafted 14th overall in the 2018 NBA Draft, Porter Jr.’s path in the NBA began with challenges. After missing his entire rookie season due to injury, he spent the next six seasons developing into a key player for the Nuggets. Over his tenure, Porter averaged 16.2 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, showcasing his scoring efficiency with 50 percent shooting from the field and an impressive 40 percent from beyond the arc. His contributions were pivotal in the Nuggets’ triumphant 2023 championship run, solidifying his status as an essential component of the team.

Transition to Brooklyn

Earlier this offseason, a significant shift occurred when Porter Jr. was traded to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for Cam Johnson. In a candid interview with Justin Laboy, he provided insights into the circumstances surrounding the trade, particularly concerning Jokic’s influence—or lack thereof—on the decision.

“Basically, what happened was, after we lost, the head coach was gone; they fired him two to three games before the playoffs,” Porter Jr. recounted. “They fired the GM, so a new GM comes in, and I think he just wanted to switch stuff up. Then the deal came up with Cam [Johnson], but Joker’s so laid back, I really don’t feel like the owner and the GM really had many conversations.”

Respect for Jokic

Despite no longer sharing a locker room, Porter Jr. maintains a deep respect for Jokic, a three-time NBA MVP. He emphasized that he doesn’t believe Jokic played a role in his departure from Denver. “Me and Jok’ had a dope relationship, man. I don’t think [the trade] came from him,” Porter Jr. stated, reflecting the camaraderie they built over the years.

As he embarks on this new chapter with the Nets, Porter Jr. carries with him the lessons and memories forged alongside Jokic, a testament to the strong bond they developed during their time together in Denver.
