Michael Porter Jr. showcases new playmaking abilities, shedding old labels
Michael Porter Jr. has long been recognized as a prolific scorer in the NBA, yet his playmaking skills had often been overshadowed. In fact, a nickname that stuck to him was “Never Swing the Rock,” a testament to his reputation for reluctant passing. However, recent performances have silenced that moniker as Porter Jr. has stepped up his game significantly, dishing out a career-high seven assists in consecutive outings.
Impactful Performances on the Road
In these two pivotal games, the Brooklyn Nets faced off against the Orlando Magic and the Washington Wizards. Both contests were on the road, and while the Nets fell just short against the Magic—a solid playoff contender—they decisively overwhelmed the Wizards, showcasing the potential of their revamped roster. Porter Jr. has embraced a more prominent role since his trade from the Denver Nuggets, now free from the shadow of superstar Nikola Jokic. This new dynamic allows him to control the ball more often, leading to a marked increase in his playmaking opportunities.
A New Offensive Synergy
Defenses are now adjusting their strategies to focus heavily on Porter Jr., recognizing his ability to heat up quickly. His developing chemistry with Nets center Nic Claxton has been particularly noteworthy. The duo has effectively utilized the pick-and-roll, creating numerous easy scoring chances either at the basket or from beyond the arc.
“He has a plan for him to get better and to show things that he hasn’t done before,” said Nets coach Jordi Fernández. “And right now for him to buy into finishing his cuts, not dancing, not overdribbling, putting pressure on the rim, everybody benefits from it. Usually when he does it, he’s the one benefiting from it. We want him and need him to play like this, because that’s just contagious and good for the group. So, very proud of him.”
Versatility Off the Ball
Porter Jr. is not just making strides with the ball in his hands; he’s also finding ways to stay impactful off the ball. He trusts Brooklyn’s big men, like Claxton and Day’Ron Sharpe, to create opportunities for him near the basket. Porter noted, “When I was in Denver, everyone assumed that I was just getting some of those cuts because of Nikola [Jokic] and his vision. But I’ve always been a cutter, a guy that likes to find easy buckets, use my size around the basket. So coming over here, it’s something that I have been intentional about. Claxton and Day’Ron can really pass the ball and they found me for a lot of easy points around the rim. So I got to keep doing that.”
Looking Ahead
Despite a rocky start to the season for the Nets, Porter Jr.’s evolution as a playmaker presents a silver lining. As he continues to expand his game, he could either enhance his trade value or solidify his position within Brooklyn’s long-term plans. The transformation from a one-dimensional scorer to a multifaceted offensive threat is not just a personal victory for Porter Jr. but also a promising sign for the Nets as they navigate their season.
