Michael Porter Jr. shines with All-Star numbers, but Nets’ struggles overshadow his ascent
Michael Porter Jr. has created quite a buzz as a potential All-Star during his first season with the Brooklyn Nets, following a trade from the Denver Nuggets in the offseason. His statistical output is certainly impressive, averaging 25.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game over the first 22 games with his new team. Additionally, his shooting percentages are nearly elite, hovering just under 50% from the field and approaching 40% from beyond the arc.
Team Struggles Dim All-Star Aspirations
Despite these standout individual numbers, the Nets find themselves languishing near the bottom of the league standings. Typically, it’s a tough case to make for a player from a struggling team to receive an All-Star nod, regardless of their personal achievements. Porter, however, remains focused on the aspects of the game he can control rather than the accolades that may come.
“It definitely would be a dream come true,” Porter expressed. “It was in my mind as a kid to make the NBA, but not only to be in the NBA but to be one of the best players in the NBA. An All-Star selection shows that progress. But it’s definitely not what I’m thinking of. I’ve always tried to be more process-oriented and do the right things day to day, game to game, and let the results take care of themselves.”
A Focus on Growth Amidst Challenges
Porter’s approach emphasizes a commitment to day-to-day improvement. “I feel like when people start focusing and reaching really hard for a result, that’s when it can evade them,” he noted. His strategy is simple: concentrate on the game and the collective advancement of the team. “So I’m trying to just stay focused on the game to game with the group we have, and stay focused on getting better, getting some more wins. Then whatever happens, happens. If I make it, cool. If not, I’m going on vacation. So, I’m not really tripping either way.”
Embracing a Leadership Role
Porter adopted a similar mindset during his time in Denver, where his ability to stretch the floor and create opportunities for Nikola Jokic played a crucial role in the Nuggets clinching a championship in 2023. On the court for the Nets, Porter has proven to be a consummate professional. He takes high-quality shots, embraces a heavier scoring load, and is evolving into a leader for the younger players to learn from.
While it remains to be seen if his performance will secure him an All-Star selection, one thing is clear: Michael Porter Jr.’s mindset and all-around play are vital assets that can potentially elevate a team’s chances of winning consistently. As he navigates this challenging season, both he and the Nets will be looking for growth and success amidst the adversity.
