Mavericks keep calm as Kyrie Irving stays on schedule for January return amid hopeful shooting clips

Mavericks Maintain Composure as Kyrie Irving Eyes January Return

The Dallas Mavericks are set to kick off their training camp in Vancouver, Canada, on Tuesday, albeit without their star point guard, Kyrie Irving. After suffering a torn ACL in early March, Irving’s anticipated return is not expected until at least January. However, recent footage of him shooting hoops has ignited speculation about a possible earlier comeback.

Kidd Addresses Recovery Timeline

At Monday’s media day, Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd was quick to temper the excitement surrounding Irving’s recovery. He provided an update that, while optimistic, urged caution. “He is doing quite well, as we can see, but he’s not ahead of schedule, and so let’s not say that,” Kidd stated. “That’s unfair to him and to the Mavs because it’s not true. Is he on schedule? It looks like it.”

This statement reinforces the Mavericks’ commitment to a measured approach regarding Irving’s return. The team is determined not to rush their star back into action, especially after their disappointing exit from the postseason in the 2024-25 season.

Irving Stays Positive About His Progress

Irving himself weighed in on his recovery timeline during the media event, echoing Kidd’s sentiments. “I’m right on schedule, guys,” he affirmed. “There’s consistency here. I’m right on schedule.” His positivity signals a strong focus on rehabilitation as he aims to return to the court in peak condition.

Mavericks Adjust Roster with New Additions

In light of Irving’s injury, the Mavericks have made significant roster adjustments, including signing D’Angelo Russell to a two-year, $11.7 million contract that features a player option for the second year. Russell is expected to step into a starting role while Irving is sidelined, though his position may shift to the bench once Irving is back in action.

As the Mavericks gear up for their preseason opener against the Oklahoma City Thunder on October 6, the focus remains on Irving’s recovery. When he eventually returns, the 33-year-old will join an impressive starting lineup that could feature Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson, Cooper Flagg, and Dereck Lively. The Mavericks are looking to put their recent disappointments behind them and aim for a successful season ahead.
