LeBron’s return shatters Smart’s starting role: Lakers’ dilemma unfolds

Date:

LeBron’s Return Reshapes Lakers’ Starting Lineup

LeBron James’ much-anticipated return to the Los Angeles Lakers has injected a renewed vigor into the team, finally at full strength after navigating a season riddled with injuries. However, the excitement is tempered by the reality of roster adjustments, particularly following the recent knee contusion suffered by center Deandre Ayton during a game against the Utah Jazz. As James embarks on his record-setting 23rd NBA season, the implications ripple through the lineup, most notably affecting guard Marcus Smart.

Smart’s Shift in Role

During LeBron’s absence, Smart had the opportunity to start nine games after joining the Lakers late in the offseason. Unfortunately for him, James’ return means the competitive landscape of the starting five has shifted, and Smart has found himself relegated to the bench. In the Lakers’ recent 135-118 victory over the LA Clippers, Smart’s role was further diminished when head coach J.J. Redick opted for backup center Jaxson Hayes in the starting lineup instead of inserting Smart into a reconfigured frontcourt.

A Positive Perspective

While being displaced from the starting lineup could be disheartening for many, the seasoned Smart is embracing his new role with a commendable attitude. “I like to [think of] myself as a Swiss Army knife,” Smart shared, reflecting on his versatile skill set. “It’s not one thing I do great, but I do everything very well. … You have to adjust to whatever the game is calling for at that moment.” This mindset underscores his readiness to contribute in whatever capacity the team requires.

In his nine starts this season, Smart has averaged 11.1 points, 4 assists, and 2.9 rebounds, showcasing his utility as a dependable defender and playmaker. Since LeBron’s return last Tuesday, his minutes have been reduced to an average of 17 per game, during which he has tallied a combined 11 points, three rebounds, and a lone assist.

Learning from a Legend

Despite the adjustments to his playing time, Smart expresses enthusiasm about sharing the court with James. His experience as a rival in the league has deepened his appreciation for LeBron’s basketball IQ. “We hear it all the time and everybody knows his IQ when it comes to this game is on another level,” Smart remarked. “To be able to learn and pick his brain and be on the court with him… it definitely feels different. It feels good, actually, to play with another guy who can think the game just as quickly as I can and understands it more than I do. It’s great to have him out there, and I think we all benefit from him being out there.”

As the Lakers navigate this new landscape with LeBron back in the fold, the dynamics within the team continue to evolve. Smart’s adaptability will be crucial as the franchise looks to maximize its potential while balancing the talents of its star-studded roster.
