LeBron and Curry’s Olympic Aspirations Fade
As the anticipation builds for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, the future of two of basketball’s biggest stars, LeBron James and Stephen Curry, remains uncertain. Last year, fans reveled in the thrilling performances of Team USA in France, where James, Curry, and Kevin Durant showcased their talents, ultimately securing a gold medal. However, as both LeBron and Curry reflect on their careers, the prospect of competing in 2028 seems increasingly unlikely.
Candid Conversations on a Podcast
In a recent episode of James’s podcast, *Mind the Game*, featuring NBA great Steve Nash, the topic of the upcoming Olympics was front and center. James, who has long been a pillar of the Los Angeles Lakers, was clear about his stance. “You already know my answer,” he stated definitively. “I will be watching it.” His words suggest that the idea of lacing up his sneakers for another Olympic run may be behind him.
Curry, on the other hand, expressed a more nuanced perspective. While he left the door slightly ajar with a “never say never” remark, he quickly followed up with a dose of realism. “God willing, I still have the choice and physical option where I could impact the team,” he said, but added with conviction, “I highly doubt it. Highly doubt it.”
Durant: The Lone Standard-Bearer
This leaves Durant as the lone figure representing Team USA’s legacy unless he chooses not to participate. With a storied history of contributions to the national team, it’s hard to envision an Olympics without the Houston Rockets star on the court. Last summer, Durant, now 37, averaged a solid 13.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.3 assists over six games, further solidifying his status as Team USA’s all-time leading scorer.
As the season unfolds, Durant, along with Curry and James, remains focused on securing another championship as they approach the twilight of their careers. Currently, the Rockets are thriving, boasting a top offensive rating with a commendable 9-3 record. In contrast, James has been sidelined due to injury, marking a challenging start to his season.
Durant’s Future in Houston
Durant’s future with the Rockets could align intriguingly with the 2028 Olympics. After signing an extension with Houston in the offseason, his contract may extend until 2028. If he opts into his player option for the 2027-28 season, he would enter free agency just before the Summer Games. By then, Durant will be 39 years old, a testament to his exceptional longevity in the league.
Currently, Durant is averaging 25.9 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game, positioning himself as a potential All-Star once again. Should the Rockets maintain their standing near the top of the Western Conference, he could very well be in contention for more accolades.
As the clock ticks on his illustrious career, the question looms: will we see Durant don the Team USA jersey in the Olympics one last time, or will Paris 2024 mark his final appearance on the international stage?
