Landry Shamet Returns to Knicks with One-Year Deal

In a move that signals both a commitment to continuity and a desire for redemption, guard Landry Shamet is set to return to the New York Knicks on a one-year deal. This marks Shamet’s eighth season in the NBA, as reported by Shams Charania. After a disappointing exit in last year’s Eastern Conference Finals against the Indiana Pacers, Shamet is eager to rewrite his playoff narrative in the familiar confines of Madison Square Garden.

A Strategic Choice for Continuity

Shamet, a product of Wichita State, had several playing options on the table. However, sources indicate that he prioritized returning to New York, seeking the camaraderie of a locker room he enjoyed. According to Ian Begley of SNY, Shamet’s decision was clear: he wanted to contribute to the Knicks’ quest for a championship. “Landry Shamet had other options but prioritized continuity in returning to the Knicks,” Begley noted. The team’s ability to accommodate him under the salary cap was also a significant factor, as they had room for a rookie veteran minimum under the second apron.

Knicks Explore Other Options

While Shamet’s signing was a priority, the Knicks had explored other free-agent guards, including notable names like Ben Simmons, Russell Westbrook, and Malcolm Brogdon. Ultimately, Shamet’s familiarity with the organization and the opportunity to build on last season’s experience made him the ideal choice.

A Season of Ups and Downs

Last season, Shamet’s journey with the Knicks was marked by challenges. After suffering a shoulder dislocation during the preseason, he spent time rehabbing with the Westchester Knicks before making a return in December. Despite the rocky start, he managed to appear in 50 games, showcasing his shooting prowess with nearly 40% accuracy from beyond the arc.

His playoff performances, albeit limited, were noteworthy; he shot an impressive 46% from three-point range, demonstrating his potential to impact crucial moments. As he rejoins the Knicks, the question remains: what role will Shamet play in the upcoming season?

As the Knicks gear up for another campaign, Shamet’s return could prove pivotal. With a renewed focus and a desire to make a mark in the postseason, he aims to help elevate New York to new heights.
