Lakers look to rejuvenate Deandre Ayton’s defense to support Luka Dončić and LeBron James in championship pursuit

Lakers Aim to Revitalize Deandre Ayton’s Defense for Championship Aspirations

The Los Angeles Lakers have made strategic moves this offseason, focused on enhancing their roster around their young star, Luka Dončić, and veteran 21-time All-Star LeBron James. This summer, they not only secured 2022 Defensive Player of the Year, Marcus Smart, but also welcomed former No. 1 overall pick Deandre Ayton from the Phoenix Suns on a two-year deal. The Lakers envision Ayton as a key pick-and-roll partner for Dončić and a vital rim protector.

Defensive Struggles in Transition

Deandre Ayton, now 27, faced a noticeable decline in performance during the 2024-25 season while with the Portland Trail Blazers, particularly on the defensive end. His struggles raise questions about his ability to contribute effectively in Los Angeles. However, some analysts believe that with the right adjustments to the Lakers’ game plan, Ayton can regain his status as a significant defensive force in the paint.

Lakers reporter Jovan Buha discussed Ayton’s potential during a recent episode of his podcast, emphasizing his previous success in defending elite players. “I think he switched onto Giannis (Antetokounmpo) and did really well defending him last season,” Buha noted. “That’s an example of a player like Giannis or Zion (Williamson), someone like that. He can switch onto some of these bigger wings and hold his own.”

Strategic Adjustments Needed

Buha also pointed out that Ayton’s ability to guard quicker guards is highly matchup-dependent. He stressed the necessity for the Lakers to diversify their defensive approach, particularly in pick-and-roll scenarios involving Ayton. “If you keep him engaged and active on that end, I think you’ll see a better performance,” Buha added.

With a unique combination of mobility, leaping ability, and strength, Ayton has the physical tools to provide significant rim protection for the Lakers. However, his defensive success will hinge on the decision-making of new head coach JJ Redick. Redick must ensure that Ayton’s matchups are thoughtfully considered, allowing him to maximize his impact on the court.

A New Role in Los Angeles

Last season, Ayton made 40 appearances for the Trail Blazers, averaging 14.4 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 1.0 blocks over 30.2 minutes per game. Despite these numbers, his defensive box plus-minus of -0.4 suggests he struggled within Portland’s reliance on drop coverage—a style that may not suit his strengths.

For the Lakers to maximize Ayton’s defensive contributions, they must deviate from the Trail Blazers’ defensive philosophy and tailor their strategies to leverage his capabilities. As a lob threat and skilled rebounder, Ayton has the potential to be a crucial asset for Los Angeles. His commitment on defense could very well determine the difference between a few more wins or losses in the competitive landscape of the NBA this season.
