Lakers Face Injury Setback as Kleber’s Quad Woes Continue

The Los Angeles Lakers are navigating a challenging start to training camp, with injuries making their presence felt. Maxi Kleber, the 6-foot-10 forward recently acquired from the Dallas Mavericks, was sidelined during Wednesday’s practice due to a troubling quad injury. Coach JJ Redick confirmed the setback, noting that Kleber “tweaked his quad Tuesday” and would need an MRI to assess the situation. “Hopefully it’s nothing serious,” Redick remarked, echoing the concerns of fans and teammates alike.

A History of Injury Challenges

Kleber’s current predicament is a reminder of his recent struggles with injuries. Just a week before his trade to the Lakers, he suffered a broken right foot, an ailment that kept him off the court until late April. He made a brief return in the playoffs, where he managed to score two points in the Lakers’ season-ending defeat against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Last season, during his time with the Mavericks, Kleber played in 34 regular-season games, averaging 3.0 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. These numbers reflect a player still finding his footing after a series of setbacks.

Kleber’s Impact on the Court

Despite his recent challenges, Kleber has shown the ability to significantly contribute to a team’s success. The 33-year-old forward is known for his capacity to stretch the floor, posing a constant threat from beyond the arc. In previous seasons, he showcased impressive shooting percentages, hitting 37.3% from three-point range in 2019-20 and an even better 41.0% in 2020-21. His versatility doesn’t stop there; Kleber is also a capable defender, adept at switching on the perimeter and finding himself in advantageous positions on the floor.

Looking Ahead to the Season Opener

As the Lakers prepare for their season-opening matchup against the Golden State Warriors, the hope is that Kleber will be fit to contribute. His dual-threat capabilities in both offensive and defensive roles would be a valuable asset to a team looking to make a statement early in the season. For now, the Lakers and their fans await further updates, holding onto the hope that Kleber’s injury is minor and that he can soon return to the court, ready to make an impact when it matters most.
