Lakers Seek Isaiah Stewart Trade to Enhance Frontcourt and Reunite Doncic with Defensive Talent

The Los Angeles Lakers have made significant strides in reshaping their frontcourt since the midway point of the 2024-25 season. The team’s recent history has been marked by a monumental trade that sent Anthony Davis to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for superstar Luka Doncic, prompting a search for a reliable replacement in the paint ahead of the postseason.

Recent Roster Moves

After missing out on a deal for Charlotte Hornets center Mark Williams, the Lakers turned to free agency, bringing in veteran big man Alex Len to complement Jaxson Hayes. However, the strategy took an unexpected turn when head coach JJ Redick opted for a small-ball lineup during the playoffs, a decision that ultimately backfired in their five-game first-round exit against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Once the offseason rolled around, the Lakers wasted no time addressing their frontcourt depth, signing Deandre Ayton on July 6. Yet, the front office might not be finished bolstering the roster. According to reports, the team is eyeing a potential trade that could see a 6-foot-8 forward heading to the Detroit Pistons in exchange for a promising former lottery pick.

Isaiah Stewart on the Radar

In a bid to strengthen their frontcourt, the Lakers are reportedly interested in acquiring Isaiah Stewart from the Pistons. The center, who is coming off a challenging season in Detroit, saw his playing time diminish under head coach JB Bickerstaff, leading to speculation about his future with the team.

The proposed trade would involve Stewart along with a 2027 second-round pick being sent to Los Angeles in exchange for Rui Hachimura. This exchange could provide the Lakers with a much-needed two-way player capable of complementing Doncic’s skill set.

History Between Stewart and LeBron James

Interestingly, Stewart’s past with LeBron James adds a layer of intrigue to this potential move. The two players had an infamous altercation during a 2021-22 matchup when Stewart, bloodied and furious after an elbow from James, pursued the Lakers star across the court. While that incident may still linger in the memories of fans, the passage of time could allow both players to focus on their shared goal of winning.

Stewart’s Skill Set

Isaiah Stewart’s fearless style of play and ability to absorb contact in the paint make him an appealing addition to the Lakers. Last season, he averaged 6.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game, shooting an impressive 55.9% from the field across 72 games. Adding another lob threat and defensive enforcer like Stewart could greatly benefit Doncic as he orchestrates the offense, especially if it means parting ways with Hachimura after two and a half seasons.

As the Lakers continue to navigate the offseason, the potential acquisition of Stewart could mark a pivotal moment in their quest to reclaim their status as a championship contender.
