Lakers eye Isaiah Stewart to bolster frontcourt with Doncic as LeBron seeks to move past past Pistons scuffle

Lakers Target Isaiah Stewart to Enhance Frontcourt as LeBron Moves On from Past Conflicts

The Los Angeles Lakers are in a transitional phase with their frontcourt, especially following a transformative 2024-25 season. The decision to trade Anthony Davis for Luka Doncic has left a noticeable void, prompting the Lakers to rapidly seek out a suitable replacement as they gear up for the postseason.

Recent Roster Changes

In a bid to strengthen their frontcourt, the Lakers faced initial setbacks. Their pursuit of Charlotte Hornets center Mark Williams fell through, leading to the acquisition of free agent big man Alex Len to complement Jaxson Hayes. However, in a surprising twist, head coach JJ Redick opted for a small-ball strategy during the playoffs, sidelining both Len and Hayes. This move proved detrimental, as Los Angeles exited the postseason in just five games against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The offseason brought renewed urgency for the Lakers to enhance their low-post capabilities. On July 6, they made a significant addition by signing Deandre Ayton, creating a more robust frontcourt presence. Yet, there may be more changes on the horizon.

Potential Trade for Isaiah Stewart

According to Jonah Kubicek, the Lakers are eyeing a trade that could further solidify their frontcourt by acquiring Isaiah Stewart from the Detroit Pistons. Stewart, a former first-round pick, is coming off a challenging season, where his production dipped significantly under coach JB Bickerstaff, who limited his role in the rotation.

Kubicek noted, “In an effort to bolster their frontcourt, the Lakers could set their sights on Isaiah Stewart. The center is coming off his least productive season with the Detroit Pistons, in large part thanks to JB Bickerstaff pushing him out of the rotation.” The proposition involves sending forward Rui Hachimura to Detroit in exchange for Stewart along with a 2027 second-round pick.

LeBron and Stewart: A Complicated History

The prospect of Stewart donning the purple and gold brings an interesting subplot, especially considering his previous altercation with LeBron James during the 2021-22 season. In that instance, a routine free throw escalated into chaos when James elbowed Stewart, causing him to chase after LeBron, blood streaming down his face. Thankfully, time has a way of healing wounds, and with the incident now four years in the past, both players have the opportunity to move beyond their history and focus on team success.

Stewart’s Skill Set

Stewart’s playing style could be a valuable asset for the Lakers. Known for his fearless two-way approach and physical presence in the paint, he averaged 6.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game last season, shooting an impressive 55.9% from the field across 72 games. Adding a lob threat like Stewart could complement Doncic’s game while also enhancing the Lakers’ defensive capabilities.

As Los Angeles navigates these offseason changes, the potential acquisition of Isaiah Stewart could mark a significant step in fortifying their frontcourt and setting the stage for a more competitive season ahead.
