Knicks take a chance on Malcolm Brogdon in roster shake-up

The New York Knicks have made a notable addition to their roster, signing former Sixth Man of the Year and Rookie of the Year Malcolm Brogdon. This move comes as the team looks to finalize its lineup ahead of the upcoming season, adding intrigue to their competitive landscape.

Brogdon, a seasoned guard with a wealth of experience, was officially signed to a one-year deal after a summer marked by rapid moves in free agency. The Knicks have also brought in Garrison Mathews and retained key backcourt player Landry Shamet, indicating a significant reshaping of their roster.

A storied career with lingering questions

At 32 years old, Brogdon boasts an impressive resume. He first gained recognition for his talent with the Milwaukee Bucks, where he was named Rookie of the Year. He later added to his accolades as he claimed the Sixth Man of the Year award during his tenure with the Boston Celtics in the 2022-23 season. Notably, he stands alongside Mike Miller as one of only two players in NBA history to earn both honors.

However, recent seasons have been marred by injuries, impacting Brogdon’s ability to remain on the court consistently. Over the past two years, he has played in just 63 games, split between the Portland Trail Blazers and the Washington Wizards. His last campaign in Washington saw him average 12.7 points and 4.1 assists in 24 appearances, but injuries, including a persistent ankle issue, sidelined him for the final 24 games of the season.

A pivotal moment for the Knicks

By signing Brogdon, the Knicks are banking on his experience and skill to bolster their roster. As they navigate the complexities of building a competitive team, the addition of a player with Brogdon’s credentials could provide the depth and versatility they need. It remains to be seen how he will fit into the team’s plans and whether he can stay healthy enough to make a meaningful impact.

As the Knicks prepare for the upcoming season, the stakes are high. With Brogdon now in the mix, the battle for the final roster spots promises to be intense, setting the stage for an intriguing year ahead in New York basketball.
