Knicks’ Quest for Depth in Eastern Conference Battle

The New York Knicks are actively seeking to fortify their roster as they prepare for the upcoming training camp, which is just around the corner. The front office has been busy in recent days, making strategic moves to add depth to a squad that aims to contend in the Eastern Conference. With several new faces joining the team, the focus is now on finalizing the roster and determining which players will earn a spot.

Recent Additions to the Roster

In a flurry of activity, the Knicks have secured deals with multiple players, including Garrison Mathews, Malcolm Brogdon, and Landry Shamet, who will be part of the preseason lineup. Additionally, reports confirm that Tosan Evbuomwan will join the Knicks for training camp. As the team evaluates its options, several other players have been invited for workouts, all vying for a chance to make their mark on the roster.

Key Contenders for a Spot

The Knicks are exploring a range of talent, particularly focusing on four free agents who could play pivotal roles, should they secure a spot on the team.

Dennis Smith Jr.

At 27, Dennis Smith Jr. remains a player with a storied past. A former top-10 pick, he began his career with the Dallas Mavericks, demonstrating significant potential by averaging 15.2 points, 5.2 assists, and 3.8 rebounds during his rookie year. In 2019, the Knicks acquired Smith amidst the trade that sent Kristaps Porzingis to Dallas. However, after struggling to find a consistent role in New York, he has since had stints with Detroit, Portland, Charlotte, and Brooklyn. Across 326 games in his career, Smith has averaged 9.7 points and 4.2 assists, with shooting percentages of 41% from the field and 30% from deep.

Alex Len

Another notable name is Alex Len, a 2013 fifth-overall pick who has experienced a journey through various teams. After five years with the Phoenix Suns, he had a two-year stint in Atlanta before multiple tenures with the Sacramento Kings, as well as appearances with the Toronto Raptors and Washington Wizards. Recently, Len spent a brief period with the Los Angeles Lakers. He brings experience to the table, averaging 6.7 points and 5.3 rebounds per game over 690 contests.

Trey Jemison

In contrast to Len’s extensive background, Trey Jemison is a younger prospect with less NBA experience. After playing for Clemson and UAB, Jemison went undrafted in 2023. He has played in only 63 NBA games, having spent time with the Washington Wizards, Memphis Grizzlies, New Orleans Pelicans, and the Los Angeles Lakers. His youth and potential could make him an intriguing option for the Knicks as they assess their frontcourt depth.

Matt Ryan

Finally, there’s Matt Ryan, a veteran shooter who has navigated a unique path through his basketball career. After an initial college journey through Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, and Chattanooga, Ryan started his professional career in the G League before being signed by the Boston Celtics on a two-way contract. His journey has included stops with the Los Angeles Lakers, Minnesota Timberwolves, New Orleans Pelicans, and the Knicks. Ryan’s shooting ability has caught the Knicks’ attention, and sources indicate he is under consideration for a deal as training camp approaches.

Looking Ahead

With training camp on the horizon, the Knicks are in the process of finalizing their roster decisions. The informal scrimmages have provided insights into player performances, especially from Smith, who has shown promise. As the Knicks continue to shape their team for the upcoming season, the competition for roster spots remains intense, with these four free agents at the forefront of discussions surrounding the franchise’s quest for success in the Eastern Conference.
