Knicks part ways with Cameron Payne despite his unforgettable playoff spark against Pistons in quest for NBA glory

Knicks move on from Cameron Payne after memorable playoff moments

Cameron Payne, once a bright spot in the New York Knicks’ playoff run, will not return for the upcoming season, as confirmed by sources. Amid a flurry of roster changes this offseason, Payne has become a casualty of the team’s ongoing transformation.

Payne’s Impact and Performance

Last year, Payne joined the Knicks on a one-year deal and quickly made his mark during training camp, earning a place in the regular rotation. Over the course of 72 appearances—five of which were as a starter—he averaged 6.9 points per game and showcased a commendable shooting touch, hitting 36 percent of his three-point attempts.

Yet, it is his playoff performance that fans will remember most vividly. In Game 1 of the first-round series against the Detroit Pistons, Payne emerged as a catalyst when the Knicks found themselves trailing as they entered the fourth quarter. He ignited a spectacular 21-0 run, finishing the game with 14 points and connecting on three of five attempts from beyond the arc, leading the Knicks to a 123-112 victory.

Struggles in the Postseason

However, the narrative shifted dramatically as the playoffs progressed. Beyond that electrifying Game 1, Payne struggled to find his footing. He averaged a mere 2.1 points per game and saw his playing time drastically reduced to just 7.3 minutes per contest. His inability to maintain consistency during critical moments likely influenced the Knicks’ decision to step back from pursuing him in free agency.

Looking Ahead for the Knicks

As the Knicks gear up for the next season, they remain a formidable contender in the Eastern Conference. Despite parting ways with Payne, they boast one of the deepest rosters in the NBA, having come tantalizingly close to the NBA Finals last year. With aspirations for a championship, the organization will continue to focus on strengthening their lineup while building on last season’s momentum.
