Knicks’ courtship of Ben Simmons falls short as former All-Star declines minimum offer for bigger opportunities

Knicks’ Pursuit of Ben Simmons Falls Flat

The New York Knicks have been entwined with Ben Simmons in rumors throughout the offseason. However, it seems that the former All-Star has little to no interest in joining the team. According to NBA insider Marc Stein, Simmons rejected a one-year contract offer from the Knicks, who are restricted to offering only the league’s minimum salary at this stage of the offseason.

Simmons Seeks More Than Minimum

As training camps loom, Simmons remains hopeful of securing a more lucrative contract than what New York has on the table. Stein reported that the Knicks did indeed extend a minimum offer to Simmons, but the player is eyeing opportunities that would provide him with higher financial security. After a challenging previous season split between the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers, Simmons is eager to regain his footing in the league.

Potential Off-Bench Impact

While Simmons may no longer be the All-Star he once was during his tenure with the Philadelphia 76ers, he still possesses a skill set that could be valuable as a reserve player. Last season, he played in 51 games, making 24 starts, and averaged 5.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game. His ability to contribute off the bench could make him a worthwhile addition, though not at the minimum salary.

Next Steps for the Knicks

With Simmons opting to pursue other opportunities, the Knicks will now turn their focus elsewhere. As the offseason winds down, they still have a crucial roster spot to fill. The team is reportedly exploring options such as Russell Westbrook and Landry Shamet among others. Time is of the essence as the Knicks navigate their final search for a player who can bolster their lineup.
