Knicks contemplate roster shuffle with trades as McBride remains a wildcard amidst veteran additions

Knicks Consider Roster Adjustments as Veteran Acquisitions Push for Trades

The New York Knicks find themselves at a crossroads this offseason, grappling with the challenge of fitting a growing roster into limited space. With a flurry of new signings, including Jordan Clarkson, Guerschon Yabusele, Malcolm Brogdon, Landry Shamet, and Garrison Mathews, the team faces tough decisions ahead.

Navigating the Roster Crunch

As the Knicks eye the upcoming season, the reality of roster limitations looms large. The team is reportedly inclined to retain Brogdon and Shamet for the final two slots on their roster, indicating that trades may be necessary. According to insights from The Athletic, the Knicks are leaning toward keeping both veterans, which could force them into a deal to create the needed roster space.

“New York is leaning toward keeping two of the aforementioned vets, with Shamet and Brogdon leading the way,” noted an insider. “In order to keep two veterans, though, the Knicks must make a trade.”

Miles McBride’s Surprising Role

In an unexpected twist, backup guard Miles McBride has emerged as a potential trade candidate. McBride’s performance has notably improved since stepping into the sixth man role following Immanuel Quickley’s trade during the 2023-24 season. Last season, he averaged 9.5 points per game while showcasing a solid shooting touch, hitting 37 percent from beyond the arc.

Despite his rising stock, speculation about McBride being dealt appears premature. The same source expressed skepticism regarding a potential trade. “My guess is New York won’t worry about McBride and his next deal until after this season, which is why I wouldn’t put my money on him being dealt this season,” they explained.

Championship Aspirations Influence Decisions

The Knicks’ management is focused on building a championship-caliber team, which complicates the decision to trade away young talent like McBride for the sake of accommodating veterans. The logic of trading a promising player to secure roster spots for Brogdon and Shamet seems to clash with the overarching goal of constructing a contender.

As the offseason progresses, the Knicks must carefully weigh their options, balancing the desire to integrate new talent while maintaining their core strengths. The coming weeks will be crucial as they determine the best path forward in their pursuit of success.
