KJ Simpson stuns Hornets, seizes starting spot amid injury chaos

Date:

KJ Simpson’s Unexpected Rise Amid Injury Turmoil

KJ Simpson entered the NBA under challenging circumstances. Drafted 42nd overall in 2024 by the Charlotte Hornets, he found himself in a crowded backcourt, competing for minutes against established talents like LaMelo Ball, Tre Mann, Nick Smith Jr., and Seth Curry. To complicate matters further, a hamstring injury sustained in the pre-draft process sidelined him for the 2024 Summer League, dampening expectations for his rookie campaign.

Yet, what transpired during the season was a pleasant surprise. Injuries to both Ball and Mann opened the door for Simpson, thrusting him into a significant role with the team. Over the course of 36 games, he averaged 7.8 points while logging 23.4 minutes per game. Although his shooting percentages—34.6% from the field and 25.4% from three-point range—were less than stellar, they reflected the challenges that come with stepping into a larger role on the court.

Gaining Valuable Experience

Simpson’s rookie season was not just about numbers; it was about learning and adapting. With key players absent, he was given the opportunity to develop his game at the highest level. This experience proved invaluable as he navigated the complexities of NBA defenses and the pace of professional basketball.

Despite the struggles with his shooting, Simpson displayed flashes of potential that hinted at his future upside. His ability to contribute in other areas, such as playmaking and defense, showcased his versatility and willingness to grow. The coaching staff recognized his effort and potential, which only fueled his determination to improve.

Summer League Redemption

As the offseason approached, the Hornets faced the potential of a fresh start with the upcoming Summer League. Simpson, now fully recovered from his injury, was eager to showcase the skills he had honed throughout his challenging rookie season. The Summer League provided an ideal platform for him to demonstrate his growth and earn a more permanent place within the team’s rotation.

With the Hornets’ roster still in flux, Simpson’s performance in Summer League could be pivotal. The opportunity to seize a starting spot is within reach, and his journey from a two-way contract player to a key contributor is a testament to his resilience and talent.

The upcoming season promises to be an exciting chapter for KJ Simpson. As he continues to build on his experiences and confront the challenges ahead, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if he can solidify his role and become a staple in the Hornets’ backcourt.
