Shaquille O’Neal Applauds Rockets’ Offseason Moves as Kevin Durant Joins Young Core

The Houston Rockets have emerged as one of the most talked-about teams this offseason, and Hall of Fame center Shaquille O’Neal is taking notice. In a significant move, the Rockets traded for 15-time All-Star Kevin Durant from the Phoenix Suns, adding a wealth of experience and skill to their roster. Alongside Durant, Houston also signed key players including versatile 3-and-D forward Dorian Finney-Smith, rim protector Clint Capela, and guard Josh Okogie.

An Intriguing Young Roster

This infusion of talent complements a young and promising core that features All-Star center Alperen Sengun, All-Defensive Team wing Amen Thompson, and dynamic forwards Jabari Smith Jr. and Tari Eason. Not to be overlooked is the addition of one-time All-Star point guard Fred VanVleet, who brings leadership and scoring capability to the backcourt.

After finishing the 2024-25 season with a solid 52-30 record yet exiting in the first round of the playoffs, the Rockets seem poised to make a deeper postseason run next spring. Durant, known for his ability to score at all three levels and his championship experience, offers Houston a significant boost, particularly in crunch time.

Depth in the Frontcourt

The Rockets have also strengthened their frontcourt with Capela’s return, and the re-signing of veteran Steven Adams adds further depth at the center position. This gives head coach Ime Udoka the flexibility to utilize Sengun at the power forward spot in larger lineups, creating mismatches against opposing teams.

Shaq’s Endorsement and Nickname for Sengun

O’Neal, who thrived playing alongside formidable frontcourt partners during his career, has expressed his approval of the Rockets’ offseason strategy. In a recent discussion with NBA insider Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson, O’Neal shared his thoughts on Durant’s addition, calling it potentially the most underrated move of the summer. “Kevin Durant going to Houston probably can turn into something very special,” he remarked.

He also introduced a fitting nickname for the young center Sengun, dubbing him the “Turkish Terminator.” O’Neal’s endorsement adds weight to the excitement surrounding Sengun’s development and his role in the Rockets’ future.

As Houston gears up for the upcoming season, all eyes will be on how this new roster comes together, particularly with the star power of Durant and the burgeoning talent of Sengun and his peers. The Rockets are not just looking to compete; they aim to establish themselves as contenders in the league.
