Kevin Durant stuns with praise: “I’ve never played with a big like Sengun!”

Kevin Durant’s Unexpected Praise for Alperen Sengun

Kevin Durant’s illustrious 19-year career has seen him share the court with some of basketball’s brightest stars. From his early days alongside Russell Westbrook and James Harden in Oklahoma City to his championship runs with the Golden State Warriors, where he thrived in a motion offense alongside Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Klay Thompson, Durant has experienced the peaks of NBA excellence. Yet, despite a roster filled with superstars, his journey has not been devoid of challenges and disappointments.

High Hopes and Mixed Results

Durant’s time with the Brooklyn Nets was a blend of high expectations and turmoil. The trio of Durant, Harden, and Kyrie Irving promised a powerful offensive force but was ultimately hindered by injuries and off-court controversies. Irving’s vaccination status severely limited his contributions, while Durant faced the fallout from his teammate’s issues, including a suspension related to social media activity.

In Phoenix, where Durant joined forces with Devin Booker and later Bradley Beal, the situation remained precarious. The Suns struggled with roster consistency and coaching changes, failing to establish a coherent game plan. As a result, the team’s potential remained largely untapped, leaving Durant yearning for a more stable environment.

Sengun’s Unique Skill Set

As Durant looks to find his footing with the Suns, he’s encountered a new and intriguing dynamic with the Houston Rockets’ Alperen Sengun. While the Rockets face their own challenges—most notably the absence of starting point guard Fred VanVleet due to knee surgery—Sengun’s burgeoning talent stands out. The young center has garnered comparisons to Nikola Jokic, not just for his scoring ability but for his skill in orchestrating plays from the paint and creating opportunities for his teammates.

Durant’s admiration for Sengun is palpable. He remarked, “Alpi is such a unique talent. I’ve never had the chance to play next to a big who can dominate in the post the way he does. It’s something you don’t see too often in our game these days, but he’s got so much more to his game.”

The respect continued as Durant acknowledged Sengun’s instinctual play. “I’m always working to make sure I give him enough space to do what he does. His instincts in the post are special. The way we’re attacking defenses is a little different from what I’ve done most of my career, but watching his growth this year has been really fun. He’s playing at a high level.”

Double Teams and Defensive Strategies

When Durant first joined the Suns, many anticipated that he would draw defensive attention, as he has throughout his career. However, the emergence of Sengun has altered the dynamics on the court. Opposing teams, recognizing Sengun’s offensive prowess, have sometimes opted to leave Durant open in order to double-team the young center—a situation that is foreign to Durant.

Durant’s comments highlight the evolution of the game and the unique contributions that players like Sengun can bring. With Sengun’s ability to command attention in the post, Durant finds himself in an unfamiliar yet exciting role, navigating defenses in a way that could redefine how he approaches the game moving forward.

In a league where versatility and skill are increasingly vital, Durant’s praise for Sengun not only underscores the young center’s talent but also reflects the shifting landscape of the NBA. As both players continue to develop their chemistry, the potential for success is palpable, leaving fans eager to witness the unfolding narrative.
