Jamal Crawford Reflects on His Journey to NBC with Mike Breen’s Influence

Former Knicks Player Embraces New Broadcasting Role

In an unexpected yet thrilling turn of events, Jamal Crawford, the former New York Knicks point guard, is stepping into a prominent role with NBC as the network revives its NBA broadcasts this fall. This marks a significant milestone for Crawford, who spent a quarter of his illustrious 20-year NBA career in New York. His journey from player to broadcaster is not just a career shift; it symbolizes a full-circle moment as he returns to the arena where he once dazzled fans with his skills.

Crawford’s preparation for this new endeavor involved serving as a part-time analyst for Knicks games on MSG Network. It was during this time that he had the unique opportunity to work alongside the legendary Mike Breen, a voice synonymous with NBA broadcasts. Reflecting on their collaboration, Crawford shared, “It was unbelievable. When you work with somebody like Mike Breen, one of the GOATs of the game, it makes it so easy. You learn so much just watching and paying attention.”

A Winning Streak and a New Chapter

Crawford’s time with the Knicks was marked by success and excitement. Despite initially intending to take a break from the game, he found himself calling seven games last season due to the reduced travel schedule of longtime color commentator Walt “Clyde” Frazier. Remarkably, the Knicks won every game that Crawford called, culminating in a thrilling double-overtime victory against the Portland Trail Blazers, highlighted by a buzzer-beater from Mikal Bridges.

Now, as one of NBC’s primary game analysts, Crawford joins a team that includes Vince Carter and fellow former Knick Tracy McGrady. The return of NBC to NBA coverage, after a hiatus since 2002, brings a nostalgic feeling, especially for Crawford, who was just starting his career in the league during that period.

Building Bridges in the NBA Landscape

Crawford’s enthusiasm for his new role is palpable. “I felt like I was built to be with NBC because I have such great relationships with people that came before me and then the next generation,” he explained. His aim is clear: to be a bridge that connects the past and present of the game. “I knew the game would be first. The game is the star at NBC, and that’s why I love the decision I made. I’m glad they had an interest, and I thought it was perfect.”

Crawford’s time with MSG not only honed his analytical skills but also prepared him for the spotlight that awaits. The Knicks are slated for eight showings on NBC this season, sharing the top spot in coverage with the Dallas Mavericks. Given the team’s growing star power and engaging style of play, it’s no surprise that they have captured the network’s attention.

Highlighting the Knicks’ Rising Stars

Crawford is particularly excited about the team dynamics and the talent emerging from the Knicks’ roster. “The star power they have, they play an unselfish style of basketball, and they’re fun to watch,” he remarked. Highlighting standout players like Jalen Brunson, he noted the impact they have on young fans. “I’ve seen kids wearing his jersey, and I’m like, you have the right guy. He’s a great guy off the court.”

As Crawford prepares for this new chapter with NBC, he carries with him not just the legacy of a storied playing career but also the ambitions of a broadcaster eager to share the game he loves with a new audience. His journey is a testament to the evolving roles within sports and the connections that continue to shape the game.
