Jabari Smith Jr.’s Houston nightmare: Rockets’ chaos halts NBA rise after Magic snub

Jabari Smith Jr.’s Rocky Path in Houston

Jabari Smith Jr.’s journey in the NBA has been anything but smooth since being drafted by the Houston Rockets in 2022. What many anticipated as a promising start quickly turned into a chaotic experience, especially after his hopes of joining the Orlando Magic were dashed. The Magic, who held the coveted first overall pick, had long been linked to Smith, only to surprise many by selecting Paolo Banchero in a late-breaking decision. This left Smith to land in Houston as the third overall pick, stepping into a franchise grappling with instability in both leadership and roster composition.

Struggles in the Rookie Season

Smith’s rookie season was marked by inconsistency and challenges. In his first ten games, he struggled significantly, averaging just 10 points and 5.6 rebounds while shooting a dismal 30.3 percent from the field and 30 percent from beyond the arc. Compounding his difficulties, he averaged 3.6 fouls per game, limiting his effectiveness on the court. As the season progressed, his numbers improved slightly; by the end, he was averaging 12.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, and shooting 40.8 percent overall and 30.7 percent from three-point range.

Despite these challenges, Smith found a way to showcase his potential during the Summer League. He excelled offensively, averaging an impressive 35.5 points, along with seven rebounds and four assists per game. His standout performance earned him a spot on the Second Team All Summer League, hinting at the talent that lay beneath the surface.

Adjustments Under Udoka

The arrival of head coach Ime Udoka ushered in a new era for the Rockets, but it didn’t come without its own set of challenges for Smith. As the team implemented Udoka’s double-big lineup strategy, Smith’s role began to fluctuate. This adjustment has led to him being in and out of the lineup, as the team seeks to find its identity and balance on the court.

The uncertainty surrounding his position has raised questions about his development and future within the franchise. Smith’s skill set is undeniable, but the chaotic environment in Houston has made it difficult for him to establish a rhythm. As he navigates these changes, the hope remains that he can harness his potential and emerge as a cornerstone for the Rockets in the years to come.

With a mix of talent and the right circumstances, Jabari Smith Jr. still has the opportunity to turn his turbulent start into a successful NBA career. However, the path forward remains steep, as he continues to adapt to the challenges unfolding around him.
