Ja Morant’s shocking decline stuns NBA: once top guard now struggling post-suspensions

Date:

Ja Morant’s Unexpected Decline Shakes NBA Community

At just 26 years old, Ja Morant finds himself at a crossroads that few anticipated. Two years after his second consecutive All-Star selection, the narrative surrounding the young star has shifted dramatically. Once heralded as a top-three point guard in the league, Morant’s current standing raises the question: have we already witnessed the pinnacle of his career?

Historic Achievements and Current Struggles

In 2022, Morant made history by leading all guards in interior scoring, a feat not accomplished by any player in a quarter of a century. His blend of athleticism and finesse made him a standout, capturing the attention of fans and analysts alike. However, a combination of suspensions and injuries has since clouded his potential, leaving many to debate his place among the elite point guards in the league today. Most observers would argue that he no longer ranks within the top ten.

This perception shift is underpinned by a concerning trend: Morant has played in just 69 games over the past three seasons. Each absence has taken its toll on his performance and reputation, with a noticeable decline in production following each suspension.

Changing Game Style and Performance Metrics

On the Hoop Collective podcast, Tim MacMahon delved into the stylistic changes in Morant’s game since returning from his most recent injury. The difference is stark.

“Listen, my GPA was 2.3,” MacMahon noted, humorously illustrating the drastic change in Morant’s shot selection. “That’s more than the attempts Ja Morant had in the restricted area tonight out of 18 field goals.”

Historically, Morant thrived in the paint, with nearly 53 percent of his field goal attempts during his All-Star years coming from the restricted area. In contrast, this season, that figure has plummeted to less than 30 percent. The shift raises eyebrows and concerns, reminiscent of the trajectory of Derrick Rose during his injury-riddled years.

The Road Ahead for Morant

As Morant grapples with this newfound reality, the NBA community watches closely. The once-promising star now faces the challenge of redefining his game and reclaiming his status among the league’s elite. The pressure is on, and the path to recovery remains uncertain. With each game, fans and analysts alike are left to wonder: can Ja Morant find his way back to his former glory?
