Ime Udoka stuns NBA as Rockets’ rise continues, ties for fourth-highest paid coach with $11M deal

Date:

Ime Udoka’s Ascendancy as Rockets’ Head Coach

Ime Udoka has quickly established himself as one of the NBA’s most promising young coaches. With a rich background in championship culture, his journey began alongside the legendary Gregg Popovich with the San Antonio Spurs. Having played and coached under Popovich, Udoka not only absorbed the nuances of winning basketball but also clinched a title as an assistant on the Spurs’ coaching staff.

A Stellar Start in Boston

Udoka’s first head coaching opportunity came with the Boston Celtics, where his impact was immediate. In his inaugural season, he led the Celtics to the NBA Finals. The team’s success was anchored by a formidable defensive strategy—ranking second in defensive rating—coupled with a strong rebounding presence, finishing fifth in that category. The Celtics also boasted the league’s second-best net rating, a formula that is now echoing in his current role with the Houston Rockets.

Rockets’ Resurgence Under Udoka

Since Udoka took the helm in Houston in 2023, the Rockets have mirrored the Celtics’ successful blueprint. Last season, Houston ranked fourth in defensive rating, first in overall rebounding, and seventh in net rating. This season, the team has further improved, currently sitting fifth in defensive rating, leading the league in total rebounds, and second in net rating. Remarkably, they also possess the second-best offensive attack—a surprising twist, given that offensive strategy isn’t typically Udoka’s primary focus, though the presence of a player like Kevin Durant certainly influences that dynamic.

The Rockets have showcased a significant upward trajectory under Udoka’s guidance. In his first year, they finished with a record of 41-41, marking a 19-win improvement. Following that, they posted a commendable 52-30 record last season, achieving a winning percentage of 63.4% and securing second place in the Western Conference. This season, they are off to an impressive 15-6 start, translating to a 71.4% winning clip.

Player Development and Team Cohesion

Key players have thrived under Udoka’s stewardship. Alperen Sengun is enjoying a breakout season, while Tari Eason had also been showcasing his best scoring efficiency prior to an injury setback. Udoka emphasized the importance of player development alongside the pursuit of a championship, noting the intricate balance that must be maintained.

“Winning breeds success for everybody. Guys were rewarded with contracts, extensions for coaches as well, on my staff. So, I think we’re all on the same page. The progress we’ve taken about developing guys, but at the same time, winning and trying to develop those habits. We’re all on the same page. Ownership, the front office, the coaches, and players. All headed towards the same goal,” he remarked, reflecting on the unified vision within the organization.

Commitment to the Rockets

Despite interest from several teams this past summer, Udoka expressed a firm commitment to the Rockets. “Teams reached out. But no interest, on my part,” he stated, underscoring his focus on Houston’s development.

In recognition of his contributions, the Rockets rewarded Udoka with a contract extension that ties him for the fourth-highest paid coach in the NBA, alongside Doc Rivers. According to reports, his deal is valued at $11 million annually, placing him just behind renowned coaches like Steve Kerr, Erik Spoelstra, and Tyronn Lue.

As the Rockets continue to rise under Udoka’s leadership, the combination of his coaching acumen and a dedicated roster could well signal a new era of success in Houston.
