Houston Rockets’ Young Core Shines with Top 25 Under 25 Recognition
The Houston Rockets have quickly established themselves as a formidable contender in the NBA, thanks in large part to the infusion of veteran talent, including superstar Kevin Durant. Yet, it is the team’s young core that has truly emerged as a driving force behind their championship aspirations. This burgeoning talent has not gone unnoticed, with multiple Rockets players earning spots on ESPN’s coveted list of the top 25 NBA players under the age of 25, including a remarkable placement within the top five.
Rising Stars in the Spotlight
Among the future stars highlighted by the league are Reed Sheppard, Amen Thompson, and Alperen Sengun, each recognized as pivotal figures in the next generation of basketball. Recently, HoopsHype released its own version of the list, showcasing a slightly different selection. Notably, Jabari Smith Jr. stepped in for Sheppard, securing the No. 24 position. The 6-foot-11 forward has been impressive, averaging 15.5 points and 7.1 rebounds while boasting shooting splits of 45-37-78. His combination of size and skill has made him a reliable contributor on both ends of the floor.
“Smith Jr. has had his ups and downs in the NBA so far, mostly because of his somewhat inconsistent, at times inefficient results on offense,” HoopsHype noted. “Still, over his last two seasons, he’s been hugely impactful, making the Houston Rockets 5.8 points per 100 possessions better during his time on the floor since 2024-25.”
Amen Thompson’s Dynamic Play
Thompson also received recognition, landing at No. 14 on HoopsHype’s list. This season, he has stepped up his scoring game, averaging 17.5 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per contest. Standing at 6-foot-7, Thompson has garnered a reputation as one of the league’s premier two-way players, though he still faces challenges from beyond the arc, shooting just 17.6% on two attempts per game.
“Thompson is already one of the most dynamic defenders – and overall athletes – in the NBA,” HoopsHype highlighted. “Possessing a ridiculous level of mobility for a player of his size, as well as some serious bounce, he demonstrates fantastic finishing ability near the rim.” In just his age-22 season, Thompson not only achieved 1st Team All-Defense honors but also finished fifth in the Defensive Player of the Year voting, signifying his rapid rise in the league.
A Bright Future Ahead
With a mix of raw talent, athleticism, and a hunger for improvement, the Rockets’ young core is poised to leave a significant mark on the NBA landscape. As they continue to develop and refine their skills, the potential for greatness looms large, promising an exciting future for both the players and the franchise.
