Houston Rockets rise to NBA elite with rebounding and shooting prowess

The Houston Rockets are showcasing a promising resilience this season. Each time they experience a setback, they respond with a remarkable winning streak. After an initial 0-2 start, the Rockets ignited a five-game winning streak, followed by another five consecutive victories after a subsequent loss, and capped off with a three-game winning run. With a current record of 14-5, they sit firmly in third place in the fiercely competitive Western Conference.

Dominance on Both Ends

What’s fueling this hot start is a combination of two-way play and shooting efficiency. The Rockets rank second in both offensive and defensive ratings, continuing the momentum that made them a formidable force last season. The addition of Kevin Durant, alongside the growth of their young core, has contributed to an impressive three-point shooting percentage that hovers near 40%.

However, the Rockets’ path to the top has not been without challenges. Two Western Conference rivals have outperformed them this season, managing to secure victories against Houston. This has led to a slight dip in the Rockets’ standing within the latest power rankings, as noted by Andy Bailey. Despite this, they remain among the elite.

Power Rankings Insights

“Since the last edition of the power rankings came out, the Houston Rockets slipped out of the top spot in offensive rating, but they stopped at second place,” Bailey reported. “Their unique blend of dominant offensive rebounding and high-level three-point shooting continues to make them one of the toughest outs in the league.”

Statistically, the Rockets lead the league by a significant margin in offensive rebounding percentage and are tied for second in three-point shooting percentage. These advantages create extra possessions and scoring opportunities, positioning Houston as a legitimate title contender.

Rivalry and Competition

While the Rockets are solidifying their status, the Oklahoma City Thunder are making headlines with a staggering 21-1 record, leaving the rest of the league in their wake. The Denver Nuggets, meanwhile, are also proving to be strong contenders. Despite a recent 3-3 stretch, they maintain the league’s top offensive rating, although their defense has faltered, allowing an average of 124.2 points per game in that span. The stellar play of Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray remains a bright spot, but the Nuggets need to tighten up defensively.

The Rockets are set to embark on their second back-to-back of the season, beginning tonight with a home game against the Phoenix Suns, followed by a showdown against the Dallas Mavericks, a rivalry that always brings intensity. Houston previously defeated both teams in November by an average margin of 15 points, albeit during different phases of the month.

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on the Rockets to see if they can maintain their momentum and solidify their spot among the NBA’s elite.
