Houston Rockets Rank Fourth in Title Odds Despite VanVleet ACL Blow

Rockets Maintain High Title Odds Despite VanVleet Injury

The Houston Rockets have made headlines with their impressive showing in the latest Bleacher Report power rankings, where they secured the fourth-best title odds in the league. This recognition comes in the wake of a mixed 2024-25 season, where the team exceeded expectations by finishing second in the Western Conference with 52 wins. However, their playoff ambitions were cut short by a first-round exit against the Golden State Warriors, a team they were favored to beat.

Addressing Offensive Shortcomings

Recognizing the need for improvement, the Rockets targeted their biggest flaw: inconsistent offensive execution. In an effort to bolster their scoring capabilities, they made a significant move by acquiring Kevin Durant, one of the premier offensive talents in the game. Additionally, they sought defensive reinforcements by bringing in Clint Capela and Dorian Finney-Smith. Capela’s defensive prowess and Finney-Smith’s 3-and-D skills were seen as crucial to filling the void left by Dillon Brooks, who departed the team. However, Finney-Smith’s recovery from a lingering leg injury raises concerns about his availability.

The Western Conference remains fiercely competitive, with the Oklahoma City Thunder emerging as the frontrunner to defend their title, having retained their championship roster intact.

Rockets’ Title Odds Explained

In this landscape, the Rockets find themselves in a favorable position according to analyst Andy Bailey, who ranks their title odds at +1600. Despite the significant blow of losing Fred VanVleet to a torn ACL—an injury that occurred late in the offseason, complicating the Rockets’ ability to replace him—Bailey remains cautiously optimistic about Houston’s prospects.

During VanVleet’s tenure, the Rockets have performed markedly better with him on the court, showing a +4.2 points per 100 possessions differential. Nonetheless, Bailey suggests that the team is structured in a way that could thrive in his absence. The opportunity now arises for younger players like Amen Thompson and Reed Sheppard to take on greater responsibilities as primary playmakers, which might accelerate their development.

Relying on Stars and Defensive Identity

The potential for growth among Houston’s young talent, coupled with the playmaking abilities of veterans like Durant and Alperen Şengün, could create a dynamic offensive structure. Their ability to attract defensive attention may provide Thompson and Sheppard with the space needed to adapt and grow.

Rockets head coach Ime Udoka has indicated that the team will employ a mix of strategies to compensate for VanVleet’s absence, relying on a combination of players to fulfill ball-handling duties. Sheppard, who was already projected for a significant role this season, is now poised for an even larger impact.

Despite the setback of VanVleet’s injury, the Rockets’ commitment to a tenacious defensive philosophy remains intact. Their length and versatility allow for a more upsized lineup, presenting challenges for opponents. With stars like Durant and Sengun alongside promising talents like Thompson, Houston is still in the hunt for a championship, proving that even amid adversity, they can remain competitive in the league.
