Houston Rockets face crisis after shocking OT loss, pressure mounts ahead of crucial Denver clash

Rockets Face Pressure After Disheartening Overtime Loss

The Houston Rockets, who soared to prominence in the NBA early this season, are now grappling with a troubling downturn just as the calendar turns to 2026. After an impressive 13-2 run following a rocky start that saw them drop their first two games, the Rockets have stumbled through December, posting a lackluster 3-4 record. The latest setback—a heart-wrenching 133-128 overtime defeat to the struggling New Orleans Pelicans—has raised serious questions about the team’s resilience and overall direction.

Defensive Lapses Haunt the Rockets

While the Rockets showcased their offensive prowess against the Pelicans, their inability to contain opponents was glaring. New Orleans shot a striking 51% from the field and a notable 41% from beyond the arc, racking up a staggering 74 points in the decisive third and fourth quarters. Overtime was equally dismal for Houston, as they fell victim to a 14-9 scoring deficit. This marked the Rockets’ third overtime game of the season, and they now hold a disappointing 1-3 record in such situations, with shooting splits of 34-13-82.

Impending Clash with the Nuggets

This latest loss comes on the heels of another tight contest earlier in the week against the Denver Nuggets, where the Rockets fell 128-125. With the Nuggets looming again on Saturday, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Houston is currently 0-2 against Denver this season, and a victory is paramount as they strive to assert themselves among the league’s elite. Their overall record against the top three seeds in both conferences stands at a dismal 1-5, contrasting sharply with their 15-3 mark against all other teams.

If the Rockets are unable to turn the tide against the Nuggets, it may cement their status as a playoff team but could also hinder their aspirations of being considered legitimate title contenders. A third consecutive loss would likely intensify trade rumors surrounding the roster, especially with injuries to key players like Tari Eason and Dorian Finney-Smith.

Offensive Challenges Persist

The Rockets’ struggles are compounded by the absence of a consistent offensive initiator, with Fred VanVleet sidelined. Coach Ime Udoka has referred to the team’s offensive strategy as a ‘committee,’ which has been commendable, but questions remain about its sustainability moving forward.

As the race for playoff positioning heats up in the competitive Western Conference, Houston is aware that they could tumble back to the sixth seed if they lose and the Minnesota Timberwolves secure a win. Last season, the narrow gap between the second seed and the Play-In Tournament highlighted the importance of each game, a reality that will likely persist into 2026.

Looking Ahead

A win against Denver, particularly if it comes in convincing fashion, could alleviate some of the mounting concerns surrounding the Rockets. The Saturday matchup, set for the late afternoon on NBA TV, promises to deliver a compelling showdown. As the Rockets seek to regain their footing, the outcome will not only influence their immediate standing but also their long-term trajectory in the league.
