Houston Rockets seek Ayo Dosunmu to address point guard dilemma amid VanVleet injury

The Houston Rockets find themselves in a precarious position at the point guard position, a situation that has been a recurring problem for the franchise in recent years. Historically, this deficiency was somewhat masked by the significant minutes logged by Fred VanVleet, who averaged 36.8 minutes per game during the 2023-24 season—ranking sixth in the league. In the previous season, he still managed to play 35.2 minutes per game, placing him 17th overall.

In the postseason against the Golden State Warriors, VanVleet’s commitment was evident as he averaged a staggering 40 minutes per game. This heavy load not only highlighted his importance to the Rockets but also underscored the glaring lack of depth at the point guard position. Unfortunately, the offseason did not yield any reinforcements, and the urgency of the situation has escalated following VanVleet’s recent injury, which could sideline him for the remainder of the season.

Current roster dynamics

In the wake of VanVleet’s injury, Amen Thompson has stepped up, taking on the primary ball-handling duties for Houston. Meanwhile, Reed Sheppard has been utilized in off-ball scenarios at point guard. There have been discussions about switching roles between Thompson and Sheppard, a move that could enhance Thompson’s explosive athleticism, particularly when driving to the basket or making baseline cuts. On the other hand, Sheppard emerges as the Rockets’ lone viable option for pick-and-roll plays, a crucial element in any modern offense.

A potential solution: Ayo Dosunmu

Yet, as the Rockets grapple with their internal options, attention has turned to potential external solutions. One name frequently mentioned is Ayo Dosunmu of the Chicago Bulls. According to insights from league analysts, Dosunmu could provide the Rockets with the playmaking and scoring they desperately need.

Dosunmu is recognized for his ability to capitalize on defensive lapses, making smart plays without monopolizing the ball. His knack for slashing to the rim and moving purposefully off the ball makes him a versatile asset. Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 200 pounds, he brings a solid defensive presence as well, proving to be a tough opponent at the point of attack.

Statistically, Dosunmu is enjoying his best year yet, averaging 15.2 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game. His efficiency is noteworthy, shooting 52 percent from the field, 47.5 percent from beyond the arc, and an impressive 86 percent from the free-throw line. Such numbers indicate a smart, efficient player who could significantly enhance any team’s rotation, especially those that feature a spacing-oriented big man.

Trade considerations

Currently, Dosunmu is in the final year of his contract, earning $7.52 million this season. This financial aspect presents a feasible opportunity for the Rockets. By leveraging Clint Capela as trade ballast, the Rockets could potentially clear the necessary salary cap space to facilitate a deal for Dosunmu, addressing their urgent need at point guard.

As the Rockets navigate this critical juncture, the possibility of acquiring Dosunmu could be a pivotal move in reshaping their roster and positioning them favorably for the remainder of the season.
