Houston Rockets defy expectations with surprising No. 12 rank in Bleacher Report’s all-time NBA franchise list

Rockets Earn Unexpected No. 12 Spot in Historic NBA Franchise Rankings

The Houston Rockets have carved out a notable place in NBA history, earning a surprising No. 12 ranking in Bleacher Report’s recent assessment of the league’s all-time franchises. While the iconic teams like the Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls, and San Antonio Spurs often dominate the conversation surrounding success in the NBA, the Rockets’ accomplishments deserve recognition, even if they aren’t always regarded as a ‘Tier 1’ franchise.

Unveiling Historical Success

In a landscape filled with storied legacies, the Rockets’ ranking stands as a testament to their understated success. Andy Bailey, who compiled the rankings, noted that while the Rockets possess two championships and a roster dotted with MVP talent, their statistical achievements leave them just shy of a top 10 placement.

“Despite being one of only 12 teams in league history to have won multiple championships, the Rockets find themselves outside the top 10 in key metrics like regular-season winning percentage, playoff appearances, and Finals appearances,” Bailey explained. The Rockets have certainly had their share of playoff success, with 18 postseason berths across the last 30 seasons, including three trips to the Western Conference Finals in 1997, 2015, and 2018.

Key Contributors to the Legacy

Houston’s journey through the NBA has been marked by influential players who helped shape the franchise’s identity. Hakeem Olajuwon, the cornerstone of the team during its championship runs in the mid-1990s, remains a pivotal figure in Rockets lore. Additionally, Moses Malone, who led the team to the playoffs five times, and James Harden, whose MVP season propelled the Rockets to eight consecutive postseason appearances, have further solidified the franchise’s competitive edge.

The Rockets’ success, however, stands in contrast to other teams that are ranked higher. For example, the Milwaukee Bucks enjoyed a resurgence with Giannis Antetokounmpo but had years marred by mediocrity prior to his rise. Similarly, the New York Knicks have struggled for decades, only recently pulling themselves out of the league’s lower tier.

The Path Forward

While the Rockets may hold an impressive historical record, their recent performance has included challenges, particularly since their back-to-back titles. Yet, the franchise remains a consistent playoff contender, and as they seek to regain their former prowess, their legacy continues to be a topic of conversation among fans and analysts alike.

As the Rockets work toward reclaiming their status within the NBA, there is optimism surrounding their potential resurgence. The franchise’s history, marked by notable achievements and a roster of talented players, lays a strong foundation for the future. With the right moves, they may very well bolster their standing among the league’s elite franchises once again.
