Homecoming Sharpshooter: Matt Ryan Returns to Knicks Camp Aiming to Light Up the Big Apple Once More

Matt Ryan is set to rejoin the New York Knicks’ training camp, rekindling his connection with the team after a brief stint last season. The Westchester County native brings a mix of local pride and shooting prowess as he aims to carve out a more significant role in his second opportunity with the franchise.

A Familiar Face Returns

Bringing Ryan back into the fold may not equate to acquiring a superstar like Donovan Mitchell, but it signals the Knicks’ commitment to integrating talent with regional roots. According to reports, Ryan has signed a training camp contract, giving him a chance to prove his worth once again. The Iona Prep alum previously suited up for the Knicks in 19 games during the last season, after short tenures in Boston, Los Angeles, Minnesota, and New Orleans.

Notably, Ryan was drafted by the Knicks as the top pick in last year’s G League draft, a move that showcased the franchise’s belief in his potential. In those 19 games, he averaged 1.5 points over just under four minutes of play before being waived in March. His journey now pivots on his ability to showcase his shooting skills, a facet of his game that has seen him connect on over 40% of his three-point attempts throughout his career.

“It’s very lucky, a unique circumstance to come home, play for the Knicks as a Westchester kid,” Ryan stated during his initial tenure with the team last November. “But I’m locked in, probably never been more focused than I am right now.”

Strengthening the Backcourt

The Knicks are not merely relying on Ryan’s return to bolster their backcourt. The offseason has been active, highlighted by the addition of Sixth Man of the Year winner Jordan Clarkson. The roster also sees familiar faces like Landry Shamet and Garrison Mathews, alongside another recent Sixth Man of the Year recipient, Malcolm Brogdon.

In an intriguing twist, the Knicks are reportedly working out Dennis Smith Jr., a player who has returned to the U.S. after a season overseas with Real Madrid. This burgeoning group, which may include potential frontcourt additions like Trey Jemison and Alex Len, is in contention for a single guaranteed roster spot. However, the Knicks could very well orchestrate further trades as the season approaches.

The Road Ahead

With training camp on the horizon, Knicks insider Ian Begley has noted that as many as 21 players could take to the practice floor. This influx of talent and competition will provide a formidable backdrop for Ryan and his fellow hopefuls as they vie for a place on the roster.

With the spotlight shining bright on Madison Square Garden, Ryan’s return could be the spark the Knicks need to ignite their season. As the former sharpshooter prepares to take his shot at redemption, the buzz in the Big Apple is palpable, with fans eager to see what unfolds.
