Golden State Warriors spark trade speculation with Kuminga on the block
The Golden State Warriors find themselves at a crossroads as the Feb. 5 trade deadline approaches. With whispers of a Jonathan Kuminga trade swirling, speculation about potential targets is heating up. Several names have emerged in recent discussions among analysts and insiders, and while some are more frequently mentioned, others present intriguing possibilities that could reshape the Warriors’ roster.
Targeting the Stars
Prominent figures like Trey Murphy III, Ivica Zubac, Michael Porter Jr., Myles Turner, Herb Jones, and Andrew Wiggins have all been linked to Kuminga in various trade conversations. Their names have dominated the narrative, yet a recent report has suggested that the Warriors could set their sights higher. Chris Haynes disclosed that they might pursue Anthony Davis, while the allure of Giannis Antetokounmpo has captivated the franchise for years. However, these superstars will not be the focus of this discussion.
Emerging Candidates
On a recent episode of the Hardwood Knocks podcast, Dan Favale opened up the dialogue about potential trade targets for the Warriors, including some less commonly considered options. Among them, Jaren Jackson Jr. stands out as a player who could provide immediate impact.
Jaren Jackson Jr. as a Trade Target
The Memphis Grizzlies are currently navigating a challenging season, sitting at 15-16, with star Ja Morant struggling to find his form. In this context, the future of Jaren Jackson Jr. could be in jeopardy. Next season, he will begin a lucrative four-year, $205 million extension, yet this year, his salary is a more manageable $35 million. This makes him an appealing target for the Warriors, who could craft a viable trade package involving Kuminga, Moses Moody, Brandin Podziemski, and a couple of first-round picks.
Jackson’s versatility as a two-time All-Star is undeniable. He excels in rim protection, can score efficiently inside, and possesses the ability to shoot from beyond the arc—all attributes that would bolster the Warriors’ quest for another championship. While a trade for him might seem unlikely, he could emerge as the most coveted piece on the market if the Grizzlies decide to part ways.
Naz Reid’s Potential Fit
Favale also highlighted Naz Reid as an option, suggesting a three-team trade scenario that could benefit all parties involved. The premise is straightforward: the Warriors acquire Reid, the Chicago Bulls take on Kuminga, and the Minnesota Timberwolves receive Coby White, along with draft picks and salary fillers.
Reid has proven to be a dynamic stretch big, averaging 13.8 points with impressive efficiency over the last three seasons. His ability to shoot the three would complement Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler, opening up the floor for a more fluid offensive system. While parting with Reid would be tough for the Timberwolves, the potential acquisition of a scorer like White, along with valuable draft assets, could be enticing.
Derrick White’s Allure
Lastly, there has been some offseason chatter about Derrick White, though the interest has cooled since the season’s start, likely due to the Boston Celtics’ solid 19-11 record. The Celtics would not part with White lightly; however, if Brad Stevens receives a compelling offer, he might consider reshaping his roster around stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.
A combination of significant draft capital and Kuminga could prompt Stevens to reassess. Although White stands at just 6’4″ and may not fill the Warriors’ need for a big wing, his skills as an on-ball defender and a reliable three-point shooter make him a valuable asset. Imagining a lineup featuring Stephen Curry, White, Butler, and Green presents a daunting challenge for any opponent.
As the trade deadline looms, the Warriors have several intriguing options to consider. Whether they choose to pull the trigger on a deal remains to be seen, but the landscape is certainly ripe for change in Golden State.
