Golden State Warriors erupt in second half as Horford, Butler lead blowout win over Pacers

Date:

Warriors Dominate Pacers with Second Half Surge

The Golden State Warriors (6-5) secured a commanding 114-83 victory over the Indiana Pacers (1-9) on Sunday, turning a tightly contested game into a blowout in the second half. With just three minutes remaining in the third quarter, the teams were tied at 65, but the Warriors unleashed a scoring barrage that left the Pacers trailing, outscoring them 49-18 in the final stretch.

Jimmy Butler Leads the Charge

Jimmy Butler was the standout performer for Golden State, contributing significantly with 21 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists. His ability to orchestrate the offense proved crucial in a game where several other players struggled. The Warriors’ success was a collective effort, as five players scored in double figures, underscoring their depth and resilience.

Al Horford’s Breakout Performance

Al Horford had been struggling in the early part of the season, averaging just 4.5 points with a shooting percentage that left much to be desired. However, Sunday marked a turning point for the veteran forward. He ignited the Warriors’ pivotal run with a timely three-pointer that put them ahead 70-65 and played a vital role as a rim protector during a critical defensive stretch.

Horford’s impact extended beyond mere numbers; he finished the game with 12 points, four rebounds, and three blocks in just 18 minutes of play. His shooting, particularly from beyond the arc, was essential. While the rest of the team battled with their long-range shooting—Jonathan Kuminga (0-of-5), Brandin Podziemski (1-of-6), and Buddy Hield (0-of-3) combined for a dismal 1-of-14 performance—Horford’s 4-of-6 from three-point range changed the game’s momentum.

Addressing Turnover Troubles

Heading into this matchup, the Warriors were struggling with turnovers, ranking among the bottom ten teams in the league. The answer to their conundrum appeared to be simple: let Butler handle the ball more often. He did so effectively throughout the game, tallying seven assists against just one turnover. This was a marked improvement, and with Butler’s low turnover percentage compared to other rotation players, the Warriors seemed to find a workable solution.

As a team, they managed to keep their turnovers to just ten for the game, a significant step towards regaining control of their offensive flow.

Kuminga’s Role Under Scrutiny

Despite the team’s success, Jonathan Kuminga’s recent struggles have sparked discussions about his role. The fifth-year forward has not found his rhythm, with a disappointing 1-of-9 shooting night that brought his two-game total to 4-of-19 for 11 points. With these performances, speculation has arisen on whether coach Steve Kerr might consider moving Moses Moody into the starting lineup to bolster shooting.

However, the recommendation here is to maintain Kuminga’s starting role for now. His early-season contributions were invaluable, and keeping him engaged should remain a priority. Even as he played just 20 minutes against the Pacers, it’s essential for Kuminga to regain his confidence and find his footing, especially with a matchup against the Thunder on the horizon.

The Warriors have shown they can rally together when needed, and with a blend of seasoned veterans and young talent, they are poised to navigate the challenges ahead.
