Garrison Mathews lights up Knicks’ preseason debut with a perfect start from three-point range, complicating roster decisions

Garrison Mathews shines in Knicks’ preseason opener, raising roster questions

The New York Knicks kicked off their NBA preseason with a resounding 99-84 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers, showcasing a revamped depth that was a focal point of their offseason strategy. In a game that highlighted the strength of their newly constructed bench, one player stood out and potentially muddied the waters for the franchise’s decision-makers: Garrison Mathews.

Mathews makes an instant impact

Signed on an Exhibit 10 contract just weeks prior on September 16, Mathews made a memorable debut for the Knicks. The three-point sharpshooter lit up the court by sinking his first three attempts from beyond the arc, before narrowly missing his fourth. His performance in the second half was particularly eye-catching, as he finished the game with nine points, two assists, and one rebound in a little over nine minutes of play.

Mathews’ shooting display not only drew attention from fans and analysts alike but also shifted the focus away from some of the more prominent offseason additions, like Malcolm Brogdon and Landry Shamet. Both players were initially considered near certainties to secure spots on the final roster, but Mathews’ impressive outing has certainly made the front office rethink its options.

Complicated roster decisions loom

Rumors had been swirling before the game about the Knicks making a trade to accommodate both Brogdon and Shamet. However, Mathews’ stellar performance has added complexity to those discussions. As noted by analysts, the emergence of Mathews as a legitimate contender for a roster spot poses a challenge for head coach Mike Brown and the front office in their final decision-making.

While Brogdon and Shamet may still be viewed as frontrunners for potential roster spots, Mathews’ ability to shoot effectively from long range—he finished the night at 3-of-4 from three-point territory—has certainly made the competition more intriguing. In a league where perimeter shooting can be the difference between success and failure, Mathews’ skills could prove invaluable.

Mathews’ experience and potential

Despite the surprise of Mathews stepping into the spotlight against a player of Brogdon’s caliber, it’s worth noting that Mathews comes with a solid background. Over his six-year career, he boasts an impressive 38.2% shooting percentage from three on nearly four attempts per game. This experience could play a crucial role as the Knicks navigate their roster dynamics.

Looking ahead, Mathews will need to maintain his shooting prowess throughout the preseason if he hopes to secure a guaranteed contract with New York. However, if he continues to perform at this level, he could present a compelling alternative, particularly if Brogdon faces any struggles.

As the Knicks prepare for their next game, all eyes will be on Mathews to see if he can keep the momentum going and further influence the team’s roster decisions. The preseason is just beginning, but Mathews has already made a considerable mark.
