Deandre Ayton Injury Overshadows Lakers’ Narrow Victory Over Jazz
The Los Angeles Lakers celebrated a hard-fought 108-106 win against the Utah Jazz on Sunday night, but the victory was marred by a significant injury to center Deandre Ayton. The eight-year veteran was forced to exit midway through the second quarter after sustaining a knee injury during a collision with Jazz rookie forward Ace Bailey in the first quarter. Despite his efforts to play through the pain, Ayton was ultimately ruled out for the remainder of the game.
Ayton’s Struggles on the Court
Lakers head coach JJ Redick provided insight into Ayton’s condition postgame, noting, “He had gotten hit on his leg in the first half and was kind of limping through it. And then couldn’t go in the second half.” Ayton’s performance prior to his exit was limited; he managed just two points, along with two rebounds and a steal during 13 minutes of play.
After signing a two-year, $16.2 million contract in the offseason, Ayton has emerged as a crucial component of the Lakers’ starting lineup, averaging 15.5 points and 8.4 rebounds per game this season. However, with the team feeling the pressure to deliver results, Ayton’s health becomes increasingly vital.
Backup Contributions Shine
In Ayton’s absence, backup center Jaxson Hayes and reserve big man Maxi Kleber stepped up to help secure the Lakers’ fourth consecutive victory. Hayes contributed five points, four rebounds, and an assist over 18 minutes. Meanwhile, Kleber’s two points and three rebounds may not seem impressive at first glance, but his timely basket with 1:21 left in the game proved crucial in fending off a late-game surge from the Jazz.
“Obviously, Jaxson has been in a starting role for us before, so it’s very easy for him to step into that role,” LeBron James remarked. He praised Kleber’s contributions as well, adding, “Maxi gave us big-time minutes. Brought physicality, had a big-time move towards the end to get that dunk.”
Looking Ahead: Uncertainty Surrounds Ayton’s Status
As the Lakers prepare for their upcoming matchup against the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday night, uncertainty looms over Ayton’s availability. Redick informed reporters that both Hayes and Kleber need to remain prepared should they be called upon again. “I mean, everybody’s got to be ready again,” Redick stated. “I don’t want to speculate on DA, but we feel confident that we have enough options.”
The Lakers’ injury report, set to be released before their 8 p.m. PT clash with their crosstown rivals, will provide clarity on Ayton’s status. Until then, the team must navigate the challenges of maintaining momentum in the wake of this injury setback.
