Danilo Gallinari Ends International Career After Slovenia Tops Italy in EuroBasket

In a gripping round of 16 clash at EuroBasket, Slovenia triumphed over Italy with a score of 85-77, marking the end of Italy’s journey in the tournament. Following this pivotal match, Danilo Gallinari, the seasoned Italian forward and former standout with the Denver Nuggets, announced his retirement from international play.

A Player-Coach Role

Throughout the EuroBasket competition, Gallinari adopted a unique role, often functioning as a player-coach. His minutes on the court were limited, but Italy ensured he had a fitting send-off in his final game. Coming off the bench, Gallinari made an impact, contributing 10 points in just 11 minutes of play, a testament to his enduring skill and competitive spirit.

Reflecting on a Stellar Career

Gallinari’s professional journey spans an impressive 14 years, during which he averaged 14.9 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.9 assists across 777 games. His most significant tenure was with the Denver Nuggets, where he spent six years after being traded from the New York Knicks. Nuggets fans fondly remember his contributions, as he averaged 16.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists during his time in Denver.

However, the road has not been without its challenges. Injuries have plagued Gallinari’s career, including ACL tears that sidelined him for the entire 2013-14 and 2022-23 seasons. These setbacks have undoubtedly shaped his perspective on the game and his future aspirations.

Considering an NBA Return

At 37 years old, Gallinari’s return to the NBA may seem uncertain, but he remains open to the possibility. In a recent conversation with Iacopo DeSantis of Pianeta Basket, he expressed his desire to return as a veteran presence, saying, “If I were to return, it would be as a veteran, kind of like insurance for a franchise. I wouldn’t play much and would serve as a helpful presence.”

With a wealth of experience both overseas and in the NBA, Gallinari could provide valuable mentorship in a locker room, should an opportunity arise for him to extend his career.

Looking Ahead

As he steps away from the international stage, Danilo Gallinari now turns his attention to what could be his final chance in professional basketball. The veteran forward bids farewell to Italian basketball, leaving behind a legacy defined by resilience, skill, and an indelible impact on the game.
